Myers + Chang has got to be hands down one of the most popular restaurants in Boston. People far and wide flock to this Asian influenced restaurant in the South End of Boston. DO NOT let the semi shady neighborhood keep you away from this place.
To quote from their website Myers + Chang is “A funky indie diner setting offering Chef/Owner Joanne Chang and Executive Chef Matthew Barros’s very personal interpretation of Chinese, Taiwanese, Thai, and Vietnamese specialties.”
Myers + Chang have a loyal following in the Greater Boston area. People far and wide make the trek to this shrine to fun and fabulous Asian food. There are so many reasons people eat here. Some come for the local when possible ingredients and some come to have a tapas style meal with their friends. There is nothing more bonding then sharing your food with others.
Even though there is only on street parking available, it never seems to cause a problem. Even if it did this place is so worth it! Just walking through the front door puts you in a good mood. The word “kitsch” comes to mind, but in a fun way. Big communal tables beckon you to bring your friends and unwind after a long hard day.
The menu for both lunch and dinner are just as fun as the décor. The lunch menu seems to be geared towards people on their lunch hour, and rightly so. A pared down menu for lunch means people can get in and out quickly. You will still find some of the dim sum favorites from the dinner menu, like the edamame and celery slaw and the succulent wok roasted mussels with a hint of lemongrass. But it is lunch and there are also sandwiches and salads on the lunch menu. The ever popular rice bowl combos are a complete meal in one bowl and come with one of the yummy spring rolls. The chicken and rapini stir fry bowl is always a sure thing! Of course the famous Mama Chang’s dumplings are on the menu and it is worth a trip just for these!
Once the sun sets the entire place takes on a different feeling. The dinner menu focuses more on small plates to be shared with friends while relaxing after a hard day. The décor gets all sparkly and whimsical. The atmosphere becomes more relaxed and convivial as people unwind after a hard day. The dim sum section of the menu becomes lengthier with the addition of among other things wok charred octopus (little bits of charred heaven), grilled razor clams (those things you used to pretend to shave with when you were at the beach as a kid) and tiger’s tears, which have been known to induce tears in the spice challenged person.
The chicken and rapini from lunch becomes a stir fry dish at dinner. The chicken and waffles are not to be missed! Imagine ginger sesame waffles topped with chicken in a secret hot + sweet sauce. MMMMMMMM! The tea smoked spare ribs fall off the bone and are literally finger licking good! Of course Mama Chang’s dumplings are on the dinner menu as well. One can only imagine how many of these they sell a day and they must employ someone to just make these!
The service is not to everyones like as your order is brought to you as it is ready. Chances are you are not going to get it all at once, which is good since then it is spread out and you pace yourself. And if you are still hungry at the end of the meal, you can always try dessert. Made in house and always delicious (remember Joanne Chang owns the Flour bakery chain), but if the chocolate pudding is on the menu, get it! The secret to theirs is tofu, believe it or not. If you have an anti-tofu person in your group, don’t tell them. They will never know the secret.
