Some days are longer than others. Mentally and physically, there is a wear that comes with each day’s passing. Days like these I know that I am exhausted to the maximum and yet I work to find that small space within me, which allows me to tap into my spirit. Tom’s classes are great on any day, and even the tougher days.
When I first practiced Yoga with Tom Hogan, you wouldn’t have known it but I took myself and my practice too seriously. Maybe it’s because I have decided that I must connect with my body spiritually at that allotted time. I am one of those. You know; the over-thinkers. I find that if I set out to do something it’s all or nothing so I really put my heart into it. So coming to my mat meant that I find that center fast and stay there. Tom helped me around that. He asked us to move into a pose, I forget the words he used but he wanted us to hold the left elbow with the right hand but in turn said hold the left elbow with the left hand. I was working on getting there when he said, ‘that’s not even possible so let’s try using the right hand.’ I couldn’t help but laugh not only because it was funny but I was actually working on it.
‘Relax and Feel’. I love it when Tom says that. And I swear every time he says it, I am afraid he has me figured out. Me, hiding in the back of the class, trying so hard to connect to myself and working on my unbalanced life with imperfections and trying so hard to be perfect on the inside. But no; I am just another student in his class. None of it has anything to do with me. It all comes with the lessons that I among many other students experience when we come to our mats. He is present and grounded and will offer a quote that helps you realize that Yoga is much more than the poses it comes with.
Tom will always tell you though, he cannot take any credit for his teachings he thanks his teachers and those he has learned from. Tom teaches at South Boston Yoga and you can click here for a schedule. Can you tell by now that I love the whole package that is South Boston Yoga? I figure though that if I tell you about the heartfelt connections I have found there, then thereafter, when I do tell you about the place itself, you will appreciate the entirety of it all.
I still take myself seriously and on a given day I am uptight, but practicing Yoga with Tom has allowed me to smile and practice and still feel connected. If you really listen, Tom always has something positive to offer and if you ‘relax and feel’, you will find his energy, the energy around you and you will feel your own energy and the lessons you are meant to find. And I would like to believe that after several sessions, you will then work with your energy, figure it out and make sure that it is the best energy within and without.
