This is part two of an article about two food-themed day camps (Incredible Edibles and Kid Cuisine) offered by the Waukee YMCA. Joelle Kleihauer, the Child Care Program Executive Director at the Waukee YMCA, took part in an interview on these two day camps via email on Wednesday, April 20th.
Examiner: Have you held these specific camps in the past (or even similar camps)? If so, how successful were they?
Ms. Kleihauer: Yes, for approximately the last ten years, the Waukee Family YMCA has hosted both a preschool age camp and school age camp that has focused on cooking. We average approximately 35 campers in each camp every summer.
Examiner: What sort of child are these camps geared towards? Do they need any sort of knowledge base or experience helping Mom/Dad in the kitchen?
Ms. Kleihauer: No. These camps are open to anyone who is interested in the basics of cooking.
Examiner: What’s one thing you think it’s important for people considering these (or any of the YMCA) classes to know?
Ms. Kleihauer: Camps are a lot of FUN for children to attend. They learn so much more than a specific skill. We work on personal growth, social skills, skills for meeting new friends, and the core values of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, which are caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility–and so much more!
Examiner: What sort of experience/knowledge do the instructors have? Or is this based off of a specific program that your workers/volunteers will be following?
Ms. Kleihauer: Our camp counselors are put through a rigorous interview process, background checks, and training. Most have a background in education and love working with kids.
Examiner: Is there a limit to how many people can participate in any of the camps?
Ms. Kleihauer: Preschool Camp can take 24 children in each session both morning and afternoon and Enrichment Camp can take 32 participants.
Examiner: Is there anything else you think is important to include in an article on these camps?
Ms. Kleihauer: YMCA summer camp programs are FUN for children of all ages and are designed to entertain children throughout the summer. Camp is about building relationships with others, whether it be a camp counselor who is an awesome role model, to learning skills to reach out and make new friends. Activities are designed with the child in mind!
Summer day camps begin on June 6th. For more information, check out the Des Moines YMCA website (which includes links to several Des Moines area YMCA’s).
