International superstar Yanni returned to the Savemart Center in Fresno, California on May 10, 2011, with a show that his PR has billed as “the true Yanni experience”. The emphasis was on music from his current CD “Truth Of Touch”, mixed with selections from his previous albums such as “Dare To Dream”. As with all Yanni concerts, it was a spectacle of sight and sound, with the dazzling technical brilliance of his band framed in the shimmer of stage lighting that seemed to come from every conceivable direction of the theatre.
Yanni, notorious for his shyness and refusal to physically interact with his fans offstage, was clearly not shy onstage:laughing, joking and even flirting with fans between songs. “I LOVE this audience! I love ALL of you! I wanna take
all of you here, put you on the tour bus with me and away we will go” he cried from center stage, as his female fans blew him kisses, wolf whistled and more than a few made lewd suggestions quite loudly as to what they wanted to do with him on that tour bus. “At what point did I lose control of this audience”? he remarked, with a huge grin on his face.
During a moment of quiet reflection, Yanni took the opportunity onstage to pontificate on his personal views to the audience, declaring with firm conviction:”During moments like this, I believe that music represents humanity’s very soul! When I see how our musical souls come together in Art, I ask myself ‘Why can’t we do the same’? I believe we can, if we would just try harder to love one another”.
Offstage, Yanni noted:”I’m a dreamer. I’m supposed to be a dreamer. I’m supposed to see how the world can be. I’m an artist. I’m all about instinct”. Following his “instincts” he delivered a concert that fans I spoke to felt had “delivered the goods” on his promise of “the true Yanni experience”. When asked what she thought that term meant, a fan I posed that question to replied:”He makes you feel loved, and he makes you believe that everyone is capable of feeling that way all the time, regardless of whatever is happening in their life at any moment”. Hmmm…maybe John Lennon was right. Maybe all we need is love.
