NOTE: The barely-economic mind behind the Libertarian News Examiner, Dallas Libertarian Examiner, and Loose Cannon Libertarian has submitted an economic-oriented article to the Bastiat Prize for Journalism every year since its inception in 2002. The number of winning articles stands at 0-for-9, a perfect record. To keep the string alive here is this year’s submittal.
Any corporation that makes “excessive profits” does so because the corporatist-government ruling class wants it that way.
Corporations, like unions, are the legislated paper products of government. They exist at the pleasure of government. They are created, regulated, subsidized, protected, and guaranteed by government.
Politicians, unfortunately for them, cannot simply dip their mitts into the public treasury and transfer a fistful of funds into their own pockets. That’s because some pols may get jealous that other pols are out-dipping them and blow the whistle.
So they play the game.
Corporations act as money launderers for the greedy gov goons.
Politicians tax everyone and everything they possibly can and dump the plunder into the federal pot.
Then they create “laws” that allow them to “legally” funnel funds from the people’s pot directly into the corporation’s (and union’s) kitty with the full understanding that those entities will return big chunks of the “legitimized” plunder into the campaign coffers of the pols.
In short, corporations don’t pay taxes, corporation’s customers do. And corporations don’t contribute to politician’s pocketbooks, taxpayers do.
Apparently it’s not a conspiracy to rape its citizens when the conspiracy is conducted openly by government.
The only thing illegal, punishable by fines and jail time, is the failure to play the game.
Blasting corporations for their “excessive profits” makes good copy, and cover, for politicos playing the game but nothing ever actually changes.
In a free society nothing called a corporation, company, conglomerate, business enterprise or Mom & Pop Operation would get anything, neither a regulation nor a red cent, from government, and any lobbyist or legislator attempting to funnel funds or favors to free market enterprises of any sort or size would go to jail.
Same with unions and charities and non-profits and every other kind of entity.
The only legitimate “level playing field” is the libertarian laissez-faire free market.
Everything else is tilted toward ruling class pockets.
Note:An alternative would be to submit articles to the new R.C. Hoiles Prize and start a whole new losing tradition.
