While the Wichita Children’s Home came in second in the day’s voting to win a Toyota car, they are first in the community when there’s a child in need. The children who come to the home arrive typically with only the clothes on their back, if they’re lucky, sometimes they’ve been able to put some of their things in a sack to bring with them.
For the homeless children served by WCH, the brutal summer heat has meant a strain on some of the supplies which have been needed to help these children survive the higher than usual temperatures. This includes hygiene items and clean socks, underwear and bottled water.
“We welcome donations of wish list items any time, but would like to let Wichita know that during Final Friday, July 29, there will be a special collection drive,” said Janet Pack, director of development for WCH.
Dubbed the “Bare Necessities Drive,” visitors to Final Friday can bring items with them for the WCH and either deliver them to City Arts, 334 N. Mead in Old Town, or they can be deposited on the Trolley to be taken to City Arts. In addition, items can be dropped off at Sedgwick County Fire Stations at 4343 N. Woodlawn (Bel Aire) and 7750 Wild West Dr. (Park City) between now and July 29. Of course, donations can also be taken to the WCH at 810 N. Holyoke.
Current critical needs are diapers, socks and underwear for all ages, infants through age 22. These should be new items only. Hygiene items needed include: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hairbrushes and combs, hair gel, lotion, disposable razors, shaving cream, and curling irons and hair dryers.
“Our thanks to City Arts, Final Friday and Power 93.9 radio for helping us publicize the Bare Necessities Drive to meet the needs of the children we serve,” said Pack.
For the Street Outreach program, these items are always needed, with a much greater need for bottled water to be sure the kids stay hydrated when they aren’t able to get in out of the heat:
- Individually Packaged Snack Food (Ramen Noodles in a cup, cheese & crackers, nuts, granola bars, instant oatmeal, beef jerky)
- Personal First Aid kits
- Juice Boxes (100% Juice)
- Single load laundry soap packets
- Finger nail clippers
- Food Certificates (Dillons, Fast Food $5 increments)
- QuikTrip Gift Certificates ($5 Increments)
- Bottled Water (8 – 16 oz size)
If you don’t have time to shop, or aren’t sure what size(s) to get, gift cards to discount department stores such as Target or Wal-mart and Dillons are always welcomed by the WCH.
For the home, activities, books and games are always needed for the children who reside there. These include: puzzles (1,000 piece or greater); XBox and Nintendo Game Cube games (non-violent); current VHS or DVD movies (G, PG); DVD games such as Scene It, Family Feud and other TV game show games; CDs; activity passes (roller skating, movies, ice skating, and so on). It is okay for games and movies to be used, but they should be in good playing condition.
