Hines Ward added another trophy to his already stuffed trophy case Tuesday night as ABC’s “Dancing With The stars named its Season 12 winner. Reuters reported that the two-time Super Bowl champion and winner of the MVP trophy in Super XL took home the Mirror Ball Trophy on the popular dance show, beating out actresses Chelsea Kane and Kirstie Alley for the coveted prize.
Ward entered Night Two of the competition in a dead-heat tie with Kane, both having received a 59 score (out of 60 possible) the previous night. Although the oddsmakers had him as the most likely winner, nothing was certain going into the last episode of the season. So Ward simply scored his second perfect score in two nights…
Ward was gracious in victory, generously handing out credit for his win. “I never thought I’d be in the finals, but I owe it all to Kym [Johnson]. She’s an amazing teacher.” He also thanked the judges for their constructive criticism throughout the season.
The victory was the second for Ward’s professional partner. Johnson also won Season 10 with Donnie Osmond as her partner.
And Hines Ward won in style, scoring a 59 out of a possible 60 on Night One of the finale, receiving a perfect score from the judges with a Freestyle number to the Jackson 5’s “Dancing Machine” and “I Want You Back,” and a near perfect score with a Quickstep on Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ On The Ritz.” He and Johnson pulled down a second perfect score on Night Two, doing a spirited Samba to Earth, Wind, and Fire’s “Fantasy.”
Kirstie Alley, Night One’s last-place finisher, also received a perfect score with her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, for their Cha-cha-cha to Cee Lo Green’s mega-hit, “Forget You.” The popular “Cheers” actress would finish second in the competition.
Chelsea Kane received the least viewer votes of the three finalists, but she and partner Mark Ballas also scored a perfect 30 on their last performance. They floated across the floor in a Viennese Waltz to the John Williams’ “Hedwig’s Theme,” a song culled from the “Harry Potter” franchise.
Ward also said that he hoped he had done Pittsburgh proud. The four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver has played his entire professional football career in the City of Champions and holds several career receiving records for the Steelers.
