“WHERE’S SUPERMAN NOW?”
by Risha Hall
The world has been in chaos for awhile now — with global warming, ongoing wars, nuclear meltdowns in Japan, world hunger, immigration issues…the list is endless. The people of Japan have been suffering for months and continue to do so.
Where is Superman when we need him? If this were a fantasy world, we could use the help of all the superheroes now to heal this planet — Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Batman and so on.
We can make up stories with our children and tell them that Wonder Woman or Superman is going to fly from the Golden Gate Bridge to Fukushima, with huge disks to seal off the nuclear reactors in Japan. Unfortunately, what is happening on earth is real and superheroes live in the world of science fiction or fantasy. But what is happening now is surreal, at times.
In Buddhism, there are “The Four Noble Truths,” which state that there is suffering on earth and that the path leading to the cessation of suffering is the “Eightfold Path.” I have written about different segments of the latter in previous articles.
There’s a video at www.fairewinds.com/updates called “Hot Particles From Japan to Seattle Virtually Undetectable when Inhaled or Swallowed,” by Arnie Gundersen. I want the radiation from Japan to stop traversing the earth. This video is on the xenon and krypton in our atmosphere and takes a hard look at reality. Krypton reminded me of kryptonite, which is what led me to think about Superman and the superheroes.
The path out of our current state of affairs is to ACT. Buddhists would call it ‘right action’, as part of the Eightfold Path. In this context, right action would involve educating others and writing to our world leaders, regularly, to urge them to contain and seal off the nuclear reactors now, as they have been melting down for months in Japan.
If you are reading this article, then I am assuming that you are either a compassionate person or perhaps, a “green” or eco-person, who cares about the fate of the planet. Maybe you are both. My reason for writing this article is to help turn the tide for the present and future generations. Here is some contact info if you can help: [email protected] or call 202.456.1111 for President Obama. Thousands of Japanese want to close down the Fukushima power plant, which makes perfect sense, given the current circumstances. We can support these folks in Japan by writing to our world leaders or donating to one of the organizations listed here.
At nukefree.org, there is an article from Common Dreams by Anne Landman called, “What Happened to Media Coverage of Fukushima?” It’s true, I have not seen a news report or article on this issue for awhile. If the majority of Americans do not search for news on one of the above websites, they may be left in the dark. Some folks would rather not know the truth, which is their choice.
Some friends have told me that the world news has been overwhelming for them. They have families to raise, full-time jobs, etc. It takes only 5 minutes to contact a world leader each week. If some are feeling apathetic, my suggestion is to turn their apathy or denial into action by contacting a world leader, forming a discussion group in their community; talking to and supporting others. If you have any useful ideas, please feel free to share them with me. I work on these issues briefly each day, then I go out and enjoy life. Sometimes I’ll go to a community event or a concert; volunteer, explore a new park. Find something relaxing to do each day for at least 30 minutes.
There are no superheroes. If we each do our part everyday, maybe we can turn things around. Who knows? We can only try… The children on this earth give me hope. Keep the faith – and never give up hope! Wishing you peace, good health and joy.
