When traveling, there are so many things to worry about when you get to a new location. Especially when it’s the first time you’ve visited a place. You have to know where you hotel is, find the banks, and one of the more important things is where the heck do you eat.
Well first off, welcome to Weslaco, TX! Being close to the border of Mexico you will find an influx of Mexican restaurants within the city limits. However there are plenty of options for the hungry traveler like you!
Mosey on over to Fiesta Tex-Mex (615 Business Hwy. 83) for breakfast. They offer plenty of tacos, plates, and fresh menudo (tripe soup with hominy). What makes this location stand out is the homemade tortillas right in front of you! The flour is soft and fluffy (unless you like it crunchy, then just ask!), and the corn is amazingly flavorful. They offer a lunch buffet and fabulous sizzling plates for dinner! Check them out athttp://fiestatexmex.com/
If you are in a rush and just need a quick taco, try the Pick Up (or it might be named Bravo now). Located at 1400 East Bus. 83, it’s an incredible delicious location hiding in a gas station. Home to giant and CHEAP breakfast tacos, it’s a surprise you would not expect. But Weslacoians know about it and you will often find a line in the morning, so be prepared!
Let’s talk BBQ. Now who doesn’t love some smoky ribs or tender, succulent chicken cooked over the fire? Now Weslaco has 2 main locations that offer some decent BBQ and ironically they are very close with only two and a half blocks separating them. The original BBQ location is Fat Daddy’s located at 1322 S. International Blvd.
With a name like that you can’t help but wonder through the doors. They offer everything from large delicious hamburgers to ribs, fish, and chicken fried steaks. Great prices will make a great addition to any trip. Try the Texas Toothpicks for some onion and jalapeños fried up together and served with ranch. Fat Daddy’s menu is not online but you can find a lot more information from the web.
Now, if you want some delicious hamburgers and more, slide on over to Ranch House Burgers and Blue Bell found at 1015 S. International Blvd.
The atmosphere here is less business and homier as it was an actual home! They have burgers and ice cream and other freshly made items. The chicken fried steaks, and the homemade meatloaf often will remind you of a mothers cooking. The burgers have a ton of variety like the 1015 Onion (which is a sweet variety you will find that originated from this area). The John Wayne offers two giant patties with onion rings on top. It’s ok if you don’t finish it; they do have to-go boxes. Are you a spicy lover or just want a challenge? Then try the Fire in the Hole! Topped with jalapeños, serranos, and habaneros, you are looking at a long antacid filled night. One key thing is you top it yourself with veggies (like Wallbangers or Fuddruckers). This place is a must try in Weslaco! Check out the menu and pictures here:
