A U.S. federal holiday, Memorial Day is celebrated on Monday, May 30, 2011 this year. Because Memorial Day falls on a different day each year, people are confused and are already asking the question, “When is Memorial Day in 2011?”
UPI.com announced today, Monday, May 23, 2011, that Veteran broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw is to serve as host of AMC’s Memorial Day War Heroes Weekend programming slate, the U.S. cable network said. “I am proud to play a small part in this Memorial Day weekend by reminding AMC’s audience of the sacrifices of our fellow citizens who put on the uniform of our country and go into harm’s way to help secure our freedoms,” said Brokaw.
Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday of May, and was originally known as Decoration Day which honors all who have died in military service for the United States.
Most Americans associate Memorial Day with the unofficial beginning of summer. With all the parades, cookouts and parties going on in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the meaning of Memorial Day can easily be forgotten.
Americans will be reminded when they see Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars handing out bright red poppies at area supermarkets, or attend the local Memorial Day parade and watch U.S. soldiers march down the street in their uniforms.
A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00pm local time. Another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time.
