Our interview with Natasha Onorati:
The summer and fall season are just around the corner, in regards to invitations, what trends have you been noticing amongst to-be-wed couples?
For the next two seasons, I am noticing couples who want to knock their guests off their feet with an amazing invitation. They are asking for a lot more embellishment and shine, pocketfolds continue to be a huge popular item with many of my couples. They are looking to add something different, whether it’s a fancy buckle, or fabric bow or flower. Solid colours are still in the running but many couples are looking for pattern and texture, not only in accenting pieces, but also the main piece of the invitation.
How do invitations play into the theme of weddings?
Invitations are one of the most important aspects of your party, because after all a wedding celebration is a party, it’s a party to celebrate your love and commitment. Your guests don’t have any idea of your style or theme of the wedding and the invitation is the opening to set the mood. If you have simple invitations, your guests will think you are having a simple wedding. If you have a multi-layer invite with strong embellishments, then your guests will know it is a black tie affair. Your guests can see your personal style through your invites so personalization is key and so important in the stationary planning process. I want my couples to shine through paper!
Carrying out your theme is important in all stationary from menu’s to thank you cards to seating cards/charts. If you are using a customized monogram, use it everywhere!
What suggestions do you have for people who are looking for summer and fall invitations?
My suggestion for couples looking for summer and fall invitations is to first choose your theme and carry it out! Understand what you want your guests to know before you decide on an invitation. If you want your guests to know your love story, have your stationer add an insert that describes your love story; how you met, fell in love, the proposal. For summer, lots of fresh colours. For fall, chocolate and mocha seem to continue to be popular. Many couples are still fascinated with the black & white theme. Depending on the season, they add a punch of colour. For summer, Black, White and Yellow. For fall, Black, White, and Sand. Also I have noticed that many couples choose themes and colours that don’t fit the season, which I love! It shows their personal style. And lastly, my personal favourite for any season, personalization!!! Whether it’s a family crest, or specialized monogram.
Were there any big differences in trends this year vs. last year with invitations?
Pocketfolds were very popular last year and continue to be popular with my couples this year, and I find that couples for 2012 are still interested in pocketfolds. Many couples like the fact that everything is in one solid package which makes it easier for their guests to keep and not lose any of the inserts they receive. My couples want to be bold and many of them truly feel that at one point, people would throw away invitations, but that theirs will be one that everyone will save. They want to make it worthy for that reason. Patterns are very popular with my 2011 couples, where in 2010 I didn’t have a lot of couples asking for pattern and texture. 2011 couples are all about the patterns.
What are some predictions you have for the seasons to come? What are couples looking for when it comes to invitations?
I think that for the next two years, patterns, pocketfolds and embellishments aren’t going anywhere. They’re here to stay. Many couples continue to ask how we can make their invite different than anything they have seen before.
2011 is the time to show your personality. Let your guests see who you both are as a couple and have them excited for the months leading up to your event! A good invite will have people on the edge of their seats! Most importantly, have fun with it because that’s what will show who you both are as a couple
What about the eco-conscious couple. What types of invitations do you recommend for them?
For the eco-conscious couples, there are recycled papers and many printers have started providing soy-based inks.
When dealing with luxury weddings, have you noticed couples opting for more expensive invitations? What has been the trend amongst the luxury couple?
Bling and texture! Luxury weddings will always tend to have the couple who wants to spend all that they need to spend in order to get the supreme invite and stationary. Raised print, embossing and embellishment is very popular with luxury wedding couples. Many of them will want to customize their stationary with a monogram or other personalization.
What is a good timeline for ordering invitations?
With Paper Angels Invitations, our ordering process can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks. A good timeline for sending out invitations is about 2-3 months in advanced. Your guests should have your invites in their possession no later than a month before your event. So keep in mind how long it takes to receive your invitations in order to prepare to have them sent out on time.
Any other tips and advice you would like to share?
When choosing an invitation designer, choose someone who will see your vision. We never believe in the word “no”. If a couple is set on a particular invitation design, we will strive to provide this to them and help them create the vision they have in their minds, unless it is impossible. I know most brides will have an idea of exactly what they want for stationary, and they may not see it available. We will help work with the couple to create a memory that will last.
