When a massive tornado touched down in Alabama on April 27th, it left a path of destruction and utter despair in its wake. Although Mother Nature has wreaked havoc in many areas of the United States recently, the incredible story of survival involving an unlikely hero has captured the hearts of many around the world.
Mason the Tornado Dog
Mason, a one-year-old terrier mix, was in his owner’s garage when the deadly twister in the Birmingham suburb of North Smithfield carried the pooch away. While the garage remained intact, the dog was picked up and sucked out of the garage, according to the Birmingham-Jefferson County (BJC) Animal Control. The owners frantically searched for Mason, but couldn’t find him anywhere. After losing everything, the family realized they lost their beloved pet as well.
Nearly three weeks later, when the owners returned to their damaged home, there was Mason, sitting on the porch and wagging his tail despite his severe injuries. Both his front legs were bent forward, obviously broken. But Mason was somehow able to crawl on his elbows back to the place he loved most, his home.
The owners, who wish to remain anonymous, realized they could no longer take care of their furry friend due to his extreme injuries and asked the shelter to take him in. BJC Animal Control asked Vulcan Park Animal Care’s Dr. William Lamb if he could help and he said yes, “He was dehydrated, malnourished, about 50 percent of his normal body weight.” Once stabilized, Dr. Lamb and several orthopedic specialists spent three-and-a-half hours in surgery repairing Mason’s injuries, for free. But the generous folks in Birmingham sent donations anyway – which not only covered the cost of the two plates and 17 screws implanted in Mason’s body, but the remainder of the donations went into a general fund for others who need help.
Mason’s Amazing Recovery
On June 5th, Mason’s bandages were changed and stitches were removed. He is recovering nicely. And earlier this morning, Mason was the top dog on NBC’s Today Show, sporting two blue casts and a calm demeanor. After all, being on television is nothing compared to being in a tornado!
While offers of adopting the little guy poured in from all over the world, this little hero will be finally be returned to his family after weeks of rehabilitation. Dr. Lamb said they would work it out so that Mason could be returned to his family. Dr. Lamb said the owners broke down in tears when they found out they could eventually take Mason home where he belongs.
