If you are a veteran interested in learning about the process of campaigning for public office or would like to support veterans in politics, it is in your best interest to learn about Veterans Campaign.
Veterans Campaign is a non-partisan, non-ideological organization whose mission is to train veterans to run for public office by holding workshops, lectures, and conducting research on campaigning and related topics. The Campaign is guided by the viewpoint that our country’s veterans are a valuable yet untapped resource of potential elected leadership; they possess critical qualities that are essential at the public-official level such as leadership experience in the face of adversity, familiarity with a broad cross-section of society, and an intimate understanding of the consequences of Washington’s policies. Even more, as today’s veterans have consistently demonstrated their devotion to make the defense of the U.S. and its citizens a priority, our country needs them in public office more than ever.
Veterans Campaign began as a student organization in Princeton University propelled by U.S. Marine Corps Veterans Seth McCormick Lynn and Michael Hunzeker. Basically, these two gentlemen volunteered their own time to assemble a group of people that met on a weekly basis to discuss ways of encouraging and training veterans to run for public office. Eventually, the group reached out to two visiting Princeton faculty members who were former congressmen. Then, the congressmen persuaded the Princeton administration to support the initiative, and the Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School, Anne Marie Slaughter agreed to fund the first workshop. In September 2009, with 75 participants, the Campaign held this workshop with resounding success. Not long after, Mr. Lynn met with representatives of The George Washington University and they worked together to hold a second workshop in April 2010. The event was received with huge enthusiasm and 100 veterans were trained.
Today, Veterans Campaign is based out of The George Washington University, and is in the midst of planning future training workshops, a distinguished speaker series, research and analysis, online training, and a fellowship program for student veterans. Instructors include a candidate and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, a former member of staff from the White House, an Assistant State’s Attorney, military officers and reservists, executive officers from the private industry, faculty members from The George Washington University, fundraising professionals, international public speakers, and political commentators, coaches, and writers. Mr. Seth Lynn serves as the Executive Director of the Campaign and manages the day-to-day operations. He also works with The George Washington University on student veterans’ outreach and support, and advising the University on ways to assist veterans who wish to continue serving outside the military.
