June 7, the U.S. Men’s National Team defeated Canada 2-0 in their first Group C game in the 2011 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Ford Field in Detroit Michigan. More than 28,000 fans attended the event in Detroit, which is lobbying to launch their own MLS team.
Tim Howard made a brilliant save in the 89th minute and Clint Dempsey’s goal, his 20th for the USA, is a pleasure to watch again and again.

USA coach Bob Bradley started his regulars, but with Tim Ream on the backline and Juan Agudelo up top paired with Jozy Altidore. Altidore scored the first goal in the 15th minute, courtesy of a pinpoint cross by Landon Donovan and poor goalkeeping by Canada’s Lars Hirschfeld. It was Altidore’s 11th goal in 35 caps. While his performance was improved, it was not altogether convincing.
Canada started the second half with an attacking mindset and caught the USMNT off guard, but Dempsey crushed their hopes when he laced the ball through two defenders into the net from an almost impossible angle. Ali Gerba delivered the most dangerous shots for Canada when he came on in the 65th minute, but Canada coach Stephen Hart made a poor decision in subbing out Will Johnson.
“We always knew the first game of a tournament is important,” said defender Carlos Bocanegra. “We knew that they were going to have energy so we matched that energy. Credit to the guys, we came out and pressed and tried to get at them early and create some chances and the goal eventually came out of it.”
The USA next face Panama on June 11 and Guadeloupe on June 14 in Group C Gold Cup play.
