BALTIMORE, MARYLAND: Last week on Monay, May 16th, new charges were officially filed on the two teens who are being accused of attacking a transgendered woman at a Maryland McDonald’s this past April 18th.
Teonna Brown, 18, was indicted last week on both assault and hate crime charges stemming from the attack on Chrissy Lee Polis In addition, Brown is also being charged with assaulting a McDonald’s employee and another McDonald’s customer who tried to intervene. Brown Maintains her innocence regarding the allegations.
A 14-year-old girl is also facing the same assault and hate crime charges as Brown, in a Maryland juvenile court. The name of the 14-year old is being withheld due to her age.
Both teenagers are currently being held at this time and prosecutors say that no one else will be charged in the April 18th attack.
The initial attack that led to the two teens being charged took place on April 18th at a Baltimore McDonald’s. The two teens allegedly attacked and beat 22-year old Chrissy Lee Polis, a transgendered woman, after Polis used the ladies restroom.
“They said, “That’s a dude, that’s a dude and she’s in the female bathroom,” – Chrissy Lee Polis tells a local newspaper while recalling the incident.
According to Polis, she was confronted by both of the teens who spat in her face and accused Polis of flirting with one of the teens boyfriends. The two teens then began to physically assault Polis by beating & kicking her repeatedly. During the attack, the two teens also pulled Polis by her hair and tore out both of her earrings as well. Polis, who currently lives with her Mother, has stated that she has been afraid to go outside ever since the violent attack.
Shortly after the attack, a video surfaced on the internet that showed the beating of Polis. The video quickly went “viral” and not only showed the vicious and violent beating of Polis, but also showed Polis apparently starting to go into an epileptic seizer as well. The video was recorded by one of the McDonald’s employees on his camera phone.
Though the video does show both a McDonald’s customer and employee attempting to stop the attack, many have publicly chastised the McDonald’s employees for not doing more to try and stop the brutal beating. The McDonald’s employee who recorded the now infamous video of the beating has since been fired by the popular fast food franchise.
As anyone in the transgendered community already knows, discrimination, attacks, and hate crimes towards trangendered, transsexuals, and cross-dressers is nothing new. Unfortunately in most cases these kinds of incidences never even attain national attention. However, anyone who has seen the disturbing video of Polis’s attack and beating can understand why this story has attained national attention. A huge part of it is due to the fact that the incident was filmed and posted on the internet, but a big reason is due to the sheer severity of the attack. No human being, transgendered or otherwise, should ever be treated the way Chrissy Lee Polis was treated on that April 18th day.
What also makes this story even more disturbing is the fact that apparently only two individules attempted to stop the attack, while others can be heard laughing in the background.
I would like to publicly wish Chrissy Lee Polis a speedy recovery, both physically & emotionally. I hope that justice is served swiftly in this case, as so that Chrissy’s life can resume back to normal as soon as possible.
