You are what you eat, right? Then eating many of today’s “foods” filled with free radicals like chemical pesticides, genetically modified organisms, hormones, anti-biotics, toxic chemicals and plastic residues are not only harming our bodies, they are prematurely aging our bodies. The foods you eat are directly linked to your health and your beauty. Free radicals age the body by breaking down and destroying healthy cells, amongst other things. A diet rich in phyto-nutrients (that means plants and alkaline grains, folks) is the cornerstone of anti-aging and beauty. Afterall, if your organs and cells aren’t beautiful and healthy on the inside, you definitely won’t be on the outside for long.
Want to slow down aging? As I bluntly tell people, you can pay now or you can pay later. You can pay now for healthy, clean, organic, non-processed foods, or pay later in the form of sickness, higher insurance premiums, outrageous prescription costs, doctor visits and a premature aging body. You also pay in the form of being robbed from the way our bodies are meant to feel. So many people I know are dealing with fatique, depression, migraines, acid reflux, joint pain, heart disease, learning disabilities and more. Real anti-aging starts with real food. Do we even know what real food is anymore here in America? Many sadly, do not. The fountain of youth is found in real food rich in vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients and anti-free radicals. They are what slow down aging, reverse chronic disease, repair cellular damage and allow us to look and feel younger.
Whether you want to face the truth or not, in a time when 1 in 4 children and 1 in 2 adults are obese and with heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure plaguing nearly every American, the time has come where we can no longer ignore the truth. What is that truth? That the traditional Western diet is aging us, making us chronically ill and killing us.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states, “In 2010, heart disease will cost the United States $316.4 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.” Healthy bodies do not have cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases, it’s just that simple.
I do know, I’ve been there. I was sick, fat and aging way too fast. I’ve lost 70 lbs and have kept it off for 2 years now. No one wants to believe it, but I have the pictures to prove it. I had gained a lot of weight after birth of my last child years ago and even though I would lose a few here and there, it always came back with a vengeance. I know now that it will never come back, nor will the migraine headaches, the back pain and other daily health issues that we all have decided to accept and live with. Things like aches and pains, heartburn, acid reflux, stomach problems, irregularity and a plague of other common ailments. I look better, feel better and feel younger than I ever have, and so can you.
So here are some foods that you can incorporate today that will start to fight aging, replenish your body with essential vitamins and minerals (because scarfing down a bunch of rich, processed meats and junk and taking a daily multi-vitamin isn’t going to cut it folks), help you regain your energy and helo you shed a few pounds too.
The key is anti-aging is to alkalize your body by removing the foods and substances that produce this acid and therefore, keep us in a cycle of poor health and aging. Here is the best list of alkaline vegetables with essential minerals:

2. Unsweetened Almond Milk
Let’s talk about milk and dairy you shovel in everyday, shall we? Milk is for babies, and cow’s milk is for CALVES, not human babies. The purpose of milk is to be the sole food source consumed for a short developmental period in that child’s life immediately after birth, then weaning takes place and the foods eaten by that species are introduced. Milk is an immune-building, nutrient-dense, high fat, high calorie liquid diet designed for the baby of that particular species. So I ask you, are you a cow? Of course not, then why do you drink cow’s milk? Because you have been conditioned since childhood to drink it. Everyone else is drinking it, right? So it must be good for me. Milk does a body good? Right? Wrong. We do not need the amount of fat and protein found in cow’s milk, because we are not designed to grow into a 1400 lb animal, but what we do need is essential fatty acids, which cow’s milk has been proven to lack.
Ah, the marketing from the Dairy Association is powerful. It’s a learned behavior, and it can be un-learned. There is nothing in cow’s milk that needs to be inside a human body. Even many famous pediatricians, like Dr. Benjamin Spock, and accredited pedriatic associations agree that cow’s milk should not be consumed until after 2 years of age, if at all, yet many formulas are still made with Whey Protein and Casein, the primary proteins found in cow’s milk. We have been conditioned by years of marketing, sad but true. The baby formula industry is yet another racket, and deserving of it’s own blog. In the meantime, do your own research, you will see.
“You may be surprised to learn that most of the human beings that live on planet Earth today do not drink or use cow’s milk. Further, most of them can’t drink milk because it makes them ill. A quotation from the March/April 1991 Utne Reader: You may decide to join the growing number of Americans who are eliminating dairy products from their diets altogether. Although this sounds radical to those of us weaned on milk and the five basic food groups, it is eminently viable. Indeed, out of all the mammals, only humans–and then only a minority, principally Caucasians–continue to drink milk beyond babyhood.”
That excerpt I have provided is from an insightful article written by Dr. Robert Kradjian on why we drink milk, the scientific studies on why milk is not “the perfect food” as industry spokesman say and the outdated information that state licensed nutritionists are still brain washed with. It is a must read.
Dairy (milk, creamers, ice cream, cheese, butter, yogurt) is filled with health-altering hormones, anti-biotics, pesticides and other disgusting things that will turn your stomach. Dr. Kradjian states,”Fifty years ago an average cow produced 2,000 pounds of milk per year. Today the top producers give 50,000 pounds! How was this accomplished? Drugs, antibiotics, hormones, forced feeding plans and specialized breeding; that’s how.”
Yep, you heard it, dairy cows are fed a steady diet of anti-biotics, steroids, hormones, GMO corn, GMO soy, GMO wheat and other accepted food substitutes like ash, sawdust and even rendered slaughterhouse parts. Last time I checked cows were not carnivores or even omnivores. Factory farmed cows are not healthy cows. They are plagued with infection, illness and stand knee high in there own feces all day, and therefore the milk they produce is a toxic, pus-filled, chemical and bacterial cocktail.
It has to be “ultra-pasteurized” (that means it is heated to such high temperatures that it is supposed to kill all the known bacteria, but testing shows that much of the bacteria antibodies and chemicals are still present!) to even make it fit for consumption, and that unfortunately kills any redeeming nutritional qualities it had in the first place, which are not many.
Milk and cheese, even organic dairy, are highly acidic, and so even eating organic dairy daily will create many of same high acid illnesses like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, intestinal malfunctions, heartburn, joint pain, arthritis, sinus infections and suppressed immunity.
“Well, at least human mothers’ milk is pure! Sorry. A huge study showed that human breast milk in over 14,000 women had contamination by pesticides! Further, it seems that the sources of the pesticides are meat and–you guessed it–dairy products. Well, why not? These pesticides are concentrated in fat and that’s what’s in these products. (Of interest, a subgroup of lactating vegetarian mothers had only half the levels of contamination).” says Dr. Kradjian. This is yet another reason NOT to consume dairy!
Almond milk is nature’s wonder. Almonds are beneficial in weight loss and safe-guarding your health. They are high in protein, help to balance blood sugar levels, lower bad cholesterol, are very high in vitamins and minerals, high in calcium and help to alkalize the blood. I suggest buying Unsweetened Almond Milk, as the sweetened versions are loaded with sugar, which defeats the purpose of drinking a healthy nut milk.
My favorites are 365 Unsweetened Organic Almond Milkand Blue Diamond Unsweetened Almond Milkbecause they are soy free and taste super creamy. Many nut milks contain soy lecithin as a binder, so I look for brands that use sunflower lecithin.
3. Sprouted Grains (Breads & Cereals)
Sprouted grains are naturally alkaline and very high in fiber, which acts has the “sponge” to soak up any bad cholesterol and remove from your body. Flourless bread is made with grains and legumes that are sprouted before grinding into flour.
Sprouted grains have increased vitamin and nutrient content because the seed is first sprouted, making it alive and active in its growth process. The nutrients have not been stripped from the grain and then added back into the product later on, commonly labeled as “Enriched Flour” in common toxic bread brands.
Sprouted grain breads commonly use organic ingredients and are grown without pesticides and herbicides. They have a low glycemic index of about 40-45 and are low in saturated fat. Ezekiel bread from Food for Lifeis one that incorporates legumes and also uses a special baking process to preserve even more of the valuable nutrients. It is definitely my favorite brand of bread and cereal, and I do not start my morning without my Ezekiel Muffin or Cereal.
Replace your poisonous artificial sweeteners and sugar with Stevia. The number of scientific studies, many performed by the manufacturers themselves, list the toxic and health-damaging properties of these artificial sweeteners (sucralose & asparatame) and they are so copius that this subject alone deserves it’s own blog. They are so toxic that many victims of these substances have formed support groups to deal with all the health issues that have destroyed their lives.
Stevia, on the other hand, is very beneficial. It is a wonderful aid for weight loss and weight management because it contains no calories. People who ingest stevia daily often report a decrease in their desire for sweets and fatty foods.
Stevia is the extract from the stevia plant and has been used for centuries by indigenous South American tribes. Research has shown that the whole leaf concentrate has a regulating effect on the pancreas and helps stabilize blood sugar levels by significantly increasing glucose tolerance and inhibiting glucose absorption.
Stevia has also been shown to have a positive effect on lowering elevated blood pressure (hypertension), reducing gas, reducing stomach acidity, aiding in reducing obesity, increasing energy levels and mental acuity.
Stevia is also very anti-microbial and has been shown to inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay, making it an excellent addition to toothpaste and mouthwashes. Many users of stevia have reported improvement in their oral health after adding stevia to their tooth paste and using it, diluted in water, as a daily mouthwash.
I use Stevia everyday to sweeten smoothies, coffee, tea and also buy natural toothpaste that uses Stevia. My favorites are SweetLeaf Liquid Steviaand NuNaturals Pure Liquid Stevia.I buy these at Kroger and Whole Foods.
There is a new and dark copy-cat on the market produced by Coca Cola & Cargill called Truvia. Let me say that Truvia is NOT the same thing as PURE stevia extract. They have, in fact, have patented the Truvia formula. That was the first thing that made me suspicious. You cannot patent a plant, like stevia plant extract. So they have must have manipulated the plant extract in order to patent it. Who in the world would believe Coke anyway?
Truvia, contains non-organic, GMO grown stevia plants governed by the toxic giant, Cargill. Plus they have added Erythritol, a highly processed sugar alcohol derived by fermentating it with yeast, this can cause some nasty side effects. Reported side effects from Truvia are painful gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headaches and fatique. Just stick to buying the all natural Stevia and you won’t have to worry about these. Again, anything that comes from a corporate, profits-driven food giant isn’t going to be good.
5. Replace butter & margarine with Soy free Earth Balance
By now you’ve heard that diets high in bad fats (saturated fats) found in animal protein like meats, dairy and hydrogenated oils are a recipe for clogged arteries, heart disease and cancer. Bad fats also raise your blood pressure, cholesterol and acid levels in the body. When acid levels are high, it leaches minerals from our bones, causing osteoporosis, among many other illnesses.
There are these new so-called “healthy” butter replacements on the market like Smart Balance, Promise, I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter, etc. They still have trans fats (hydrogenated oils), highly processed and toxic GMO additives, as well as artificial flavorings. They are no better than toxic butter. Stay away from these fakers.
Earth Balance is a fantastic butter alternative that tasted amazing, uses non-GMO oils, zero trans fats and offers a soy free version. Delicious, healthy, buttery, high in essential fatty acids. Enough said. Once you cook with Earth Balance, you will never go back.
Why soy-free? Unfermented soy is very estrogenic, meaning it mocks estrogen in the body, which can lead to a number of health problems, um, like CANCER. In addition, soy contains large amounts of natural toxins and anti-nutrients as they are called.
You are not doing yourself or your children any favors by drinking soymilk. 90% of the nation’s soybeans are controlled by Monsanto, the World’s poster child for corporate manipulation and deceit. “Hundreds of epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, cognitive, immune system breakdown, and even heart disease and cancer”. There is so much wrong with soy, that I can not even begin to cover it in this brief paragraph, here is a link to some great resources and articles about the toxicity of soy.
6. Clean Meat
If you are going to eat meat it should be meat from animals that were fed properly and lived properly. This includes fish. All the meat you eat should be verified wild caught, organic and grass fed. Animals that live in their natural environment and eat what they are supposed to eat are more nutritious, lower in saturated fat and most importantly, free of toxic chemicals that little by little destroy our health.
Meat is very acidic, and many of these maladies, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, intestinal malfunctions, joint pain & arthritis, etc. thrive in acidic environments. I recommend eating Wild Caught Salmon as your main meat source, once or twice a week, combined with vegetables only, as food combining is essential in digestion and proper absorption.
On occasion (once every other month or so) you can indulge in organic, free range chicken or organic, grass fed beef, if you must. But unfortunately these are very hard to find, because the truth is that grass-fed doesn’t always mean organic, and organic doesn’t always mean free range. What will I eat you say? What you are supposed to eat – grains, vegetables, legumes,oils, nuts, wild caught fish and yes, even chocolate.
And of course, in addition to these 5 foods, you should be eating organic vegetables at every meal, and unfortunately potatoes and corn don’t count. They are HIGHLY acidic, GMO and in fact, they should be avoided altogether or only eaten in very small quantities on occasion (like once a month). More on that in another blog.
When you eat foods that are alkaline, combined properly, organic and free of harmful chemicals, you will naturally reclaim your health, lose weight, reverse aging and illness, and heal your body.
It’s pretty simple, you are what you eat. So if you don’t want to look 10 years older than your are, be tired, sick, diseased or unhealthy, don’t eat animals that are, consume their by-products or ingest chemical laden processed franken-foods that are nothing but free radicals.
