Recently an article in the Examiner gave Jack In The Box kudos for their new blackberry shake. Not being a food snob myself, ‘Why not’ give it a try?
http://icedjamb.com/chain-restaurant-in-national/jack-the-box-blackberry-shake-impresses-review Devon Lantry writes at a National level so give it a try seems a logical consideration. It was a good shake. This set me to wondering, which similar establishment could stand the taste test for the San Diego Bakery Examiner? Neither Carl’s nor Burger King… Let’s try Home Town Buffet!
Recently remodeled, Home Town Buffet, at 265 Town Center Parkway, Santee, CA is the place I chose to review. Located in the S.B.C. (see article for acronym definitions) http://icedjamb.com/bakery-in-san-diego/christy-s-donut-has-been-at-it-25-years community of Santee, CA, Nancy and I let our taste buds do the walking.
Give me the Olive Garden, please! The Home Town Buffet does a good job welcoming their guests. I love this place for a big party and when there are plenty of hungry youngsters with big appetites, but for Nancy and me, I’d just rather do Anthony’s or even Jack In The Box. Maybe I just didn’t like that they’ve taken to funny pricing the way the airlines have started doing. Once upon a time one price covered it all… Drinks used to be included. Now, if you’re watching your pennies, be careful how you answer ‘Do you want drinks with that? That’ll be an extra five bucks please.’ For $25.00 I’ll take the Olive Garden.
The food was pretty enough. It appeared to promise good family style sensations, but the pot roast was dry, the ribs were equal sheets of leather but the kielbasa stepped up to save the day. I’d go so far as to say the corn was good as were the carrots. Nancy did like the carrots. The salad was still a Home Town salad… eatable but nothing to write home about.
Finally, the bakery goodies beckoned. I tried the peach cobbler, New York cheesecake and the carrot cake. One small bite of each allowed me to leave the majority of those items on the plate and not worry about the starving Chinese, who I hear are now exporting a lot of food our way.
I’ll give it one star because they do offer a good place for the above mentioned occasions and the folks there are friendly and it is clean enough to call home.
