War of the Green Lanterns is a ten part story running through the three Green Lantern comic books published by DC Comics. Reviewed here is the first third of the story that was presented in “Green Lantern” # 64, “Green Lantern Corps” #58 and “Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors” #8.
Do not get tripped up by the numbering of the issues. While there is a lot of history to the Green Lanterns and to this storyline you do not need to know it all. The stories and ideas are told with enough background to bring anyone up to speed.
The four main protagonists of the story are introduced over the first three issues. In the first two issues of the story three of the four main characters are introduced with excellent origin recaps of their backgrounds and what their viewpoint is in the Green Lantern universe. The third part does not contain an origin recap but establishes the fourth character through the narrative of the storyline.
One of the hardest things for writers to accomplish in a crossover between two titles, let alone three, is a consistent look and feel to the story. War of the Green Lanterns manages to keep a consistent vision of the storyline through the first three parts. Writers Geoff Johns, Tony Bedard and Peter J. Tomasi do an excellent job of establishing who the characters are and what their primary motivations are while leaving enough mystery to propel the story further.
Each part can be viewed as a chapter in the story. The first part in “Green Lantern” #64 establishes the villain and their motive in the story with a trigger that leads to the war between the Green Lanterns. This trigger is used in the next two chapters to bring each character in line with the story and get them moving in the same direction.
Artists Doug Mahnke, Fernando Parsarin and Tyler Kirkham mange to tell the story with a consistent feel. Each artist has their own distinct style that is definitely noticeable from issue to issue. What is nice about the three styles is that each artist manages to make each character recognizable and tell the story in the same fashion. The reader gets to see each aspect of the war through a different lens.
War of the Green Lanterns began in March and the series has proven so popular that DC Comics is taking all three of these issues back to print. Second printings will be available June 1st. Contact your local comic shop to reserve your copies today.
