While there was talk of the New Orleans Saints moving to San Antonio or Los Angeles or a few other places after Hurricane Katrina; that talk was squashed and the boys are here to stay for a long time. Until 2025 in fact after owner Tom Benson signed a new long-term lease in the Superdome in 2009.
So don’t worry, the Saints are not moving to Toronto.
A remark was made recently by Doug Ford, city concillor and brother of the mayor of Toronto, that started some rumors running rampant around the league. One of those rumors was that New Orleans could possibly move up north where the NFL has been hoping to get a team for some time now.
Ford’s remarks to TheScore.com stated:
“(the NFL has) to take care of the problem in Los Angeles first. Two teams are kind of in play here: Jacksonville’s number one; New Orleans is the other. So there’s two teams. Once they take care of Los Angeles, we’re going to fly over to New York, set up a meeting with Goodell and give him our pitch.”
As quickly as possible, Saints vice president of communications Greg Bensel sent out a statement that there was not one ounce of truth to this report from Ford.
“Reports about the Saints as a potential team moving to Toronto are completely false. The New Orleans Saints are committed to the city of New Orleans.”
Not that points needed to be made here, but Bensel recognized the economic factors as well as the lease recently signed by the Saints to shoot down the rumors. Not only does the lease keep the team in New Orleans through at least 2025 but there is a 5-yaer option after it expires as well.
While the NFL has been exploring some options of a possible team in Canada, specifically Toronto, there has been no definite talk of one moving there just yet. Currently the Buffalo Bills do play one year a game there, but that is all.
Why Ford would take it upon himself to make these comments about the Saints and Jaguars is above and beyond the understanding of many right now and he was not available on Thursday for comment. The NFL has not spoken on the matter either.
No worries though Who Dat Nation, the Saints are going nowhere.
