Longtime Days fans, think back to the very first time you got to know Chloe Lane. She was in high school with a huge chip on her shoulder from being raised in foster homes and was promptly labeled “Ghoul Girl” by her classmates because of her less than stellar attitude (and frizzy hair). Did that young Chloe just lie down and die? Not even close. She fought back, stayed strong, and when she showed up to the Last Blast dance with Phillip wearing that red dress and sans glasses… she showed them she was anything but ghoulish.
When Chloe was teased and taunted, we felt for her. When she fought with her mother, we were compassionate. When she had leukemia, we rooted for her. And when Nicole tried to sabotage her happy reunion with Brady by scarring her for life, we wanted to rip Nicole’s hair out because Chloe was a likeable girl. Sure, she made mistakes and had her weak moments, but that just added to her depth. When she and Brady had their wedding and ran off to Austria, we wished them well.
Years later, when Chloe returned for her high school reunion, almost everyone seemed to despise her. We learned she and Brady were separated and she’d gotten him hooked on drugs. What? Our sweet little opera singer turned to nose candy and split from the love of her life with no explanation? It was a bit hard to swallow. Victor and Belle blamed her for ruining Brady’s life, Nicole went right back to making her life hell and Phillip wasted no time bedding her despite the fact that it had taken him an eternity to even kiss her before. The old Chloe Lane was gone, a victim of Team Higley.
I was one of the last people to abandon Chloe. When I like a Days character, I’m pretty loyal. I thought her romance with Daniel Jonas was sweet and had real potential even though it began while she was engaged to Lucas (which also happened extremely fast even for soap standards). How great was the poisoning storyline? Leave it to Kate to disgust everyone, even her scorned son, and start rooting for Chloe again despite all her blunders. The majority of viewers loved Chloe with Daniel and breathed a collective sigh of relief when they were finally openly together and happy… for that entire month.
No matter how insecure of a person you are or who is messing with you, I don’t know what kind of woman would not trust a man who risked his job and life to save her. Daniel couldn’t even leave Chloe alone when she was married, and yet she was quick to believe Vivian’s lies that Daniel and Carly were having an affair. She didn’t even bother to check and see if they were actually in the seedy motel room that desk clerk said they “might” be in. She was in the midst of what we were supposed to believe was the greatest love story of her life (forget all those passionate scenes with Brady in years past) yet she slept with her son-in-law (gross) mere minutes after she decided she believed the story.
Even then, it was hard not to have a small amount of sympathy. Nadia did an amazing job throughout the ridiculous scenarios, convincingly portraying a woman with the worst case of postpartum in history. But instead of getting her strength back and being a good mother to the child she’d supposedly always wanted (never mind that she had doubts about being a good stepmother to Allie before), she fell further and further into the victim role. She fell right into Kate’s traps, first with the drunk dial and now allowing herself to be blackmailed by Quinn. If my ex-husband was Brady Black and some Australian jerk tried that with me, he’d take a nose dive off the pier before he could throw a shrimp on the Barbie. But once again, Chloe allowed herself to be a victim. And I just can’t handle it anymore.
I hate what the writers made Chloe become. She isn’t the only character that’s been destroyed, but I think she got the worst of it. I was broken-hearted when I heard Nadia Bjorlin was exiting the show. I think she’s amazingly talented and an asset to the cast. Still, I don’t blame her. I’d probably do the same thing if my character had gone from a strong cancer survivor into a whining self-destructive victim.
My only hope is that Chloe is allowed to exit the show on a high note (pun intended, she is an opera singer)! Make her fight back against Quinn, bust Kate for good, regain joint custody of Parker, maybe even run off with Phillip since they never could keep their hands off each other anyway. Of course, I was always hoping for a reunion with Dr. Jonas, but I don’t see a long-distance relationship working out in Salem. I just hope they don’t have her slink off the airwaves unnoticed like poor Stephanie Johnson or have her slip even further down the hole that has become her life. Nadia devoted years to the show. Our Chloe Lane, our former Ghoul Girl deserves better.
