Nextbook has just announced that they have begun to ship their latest Android tablet, the Next5. Nextbook calls the Next5 the first Android tablet that comes with an Integrated APEN Digital Pen. (which was reviewed late in 2010). There are several upgrades from previous versions, as well as accessory inclusions that will make it an over achiever in the main stream tablet market.
Its key features include;
- Digital Pen Technology
- Android OS
- WiFi (b/g/n)
- Embedded Borders book store app
It comes with a 7″ display, Android 2.1 WiFi, SlideME app manager, eBook Store, 2GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, 25-preloaded books and an MP3/photo viewer and built-in speakers. This is definitely not a cost prohibitive tablet and is meant to give the android tablet market, a run for its money. The Nextbook Next5 Android tablet is now available and will cost you $299.00.
The best feature of the pen, is that it connects to the Next5 wirelessly. This allows users to generate, save and/or transmit real-time notes, write emails, and create drawings using regular paper and normal ink. It may be redundant, but it needs to be repeated, as it is the ONLY digital pen on the market that allows you to write on and transmit from regular store bought paper, not specialized paper at a higher cost. So if you are looking for a tablet that has writing as a key component of the device, the Next5 tablet could be for you.
With the inclusion of the SlideME app manager, you are never more than one app away from making this a total solution. While you may not have heard of many of the apps, they are all well described and self explanatory. The tablet itself comes with all of the conveniences you would expect, such as a browser, email, calendar, contacts and more.
As for the actual use of the Next5, its touch screen is quickly responsive to the included stylus as well as your own finger when reading books. Startup was less than 1 minute, which included gaining a WiFi connection. After that it takes less than 30 seconds to download email. The embedded borders book store app is a great thing. Borders is well known as having the best selection, including subscriptions to periodicals and newspapers. Next5 boasts an 8 hr battery life which was actually closer to 8.5 hrs as tested. For on the road use, you should invest in a power converter which allows you to use AC plugs in your cigarette lighter. Now, battery life is a moot point.
This was an enjoyable product to review. It has some much needed improvements and does not appear at this time to need more.
