If we were looking for an actress to give an award to for taking on the most varied TV mom roles, it would be hard to come up with a name other than Katey Sagal. Throughout the course of her impressive career, Sagal has portrayed three incredibly different TV moms.
Following we’ll highlight each of those roles, taking a stroll down memory lane and bringing you up to date on her latest venture into TV mom awesomeness.
~ Peg Bundy – Married…With Children – 1987-1997
What can we say about Peg Bundy? She was matriarch to a family of underachievers; ditzy, sarcastic, and not much of a homemaker (anything related to the kitchen was a complete and utter mystery). She had no qualms about rocking tight clothes, high heels, and big hair. Peg was not what you would call a nurturing kind of mom…Or wife for that matter.
Addicted to her TV, a perfect example of her inattentiveness to her family can be summed up by this quote: “Shut up Bud! Oprah’s doing a show about mothers who don’t pay attention to their sons.”
Peg Bundy was certainly one of a kind.
- Married…With Children originally aired on Fox, and reruns can still be seen weekdays on TBS at 6:00 a.m. / 5:00 c.
~ Cate Hennessy – 8 Simple Rules (a.k.a. 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter) – 2002-2005
Many believed that after playing such a larger-than-life kind of role like Peg Bundy that Sagal would not be able to break away from that persona in order to take on the TV mom role of Cate Hennessy. They couldn’t have been more wrong.
The role of Cate could not have been more different from that of Peg, as Cate was a loving mother who made time for and enjoyed being with her children. As dysfunctional as the Bundys were, the Hennessys might as well have been the poster family for a healthy, loving, functional family.
Where Peg was practically allergic to work, Cate was returning to the workforce as a nurse, while her husband took on a more active role with the raising of their children. Another notable difference would be the relationship that she shared with her husband. Sadly, the show had to tackle and cope with the real life loss of John Ritter, who played the TV dad, Paul Hennessy.
Despite a shorter stint in this role, Katey Sagal made it abundantly clear that she was more than just a one-trick pony.
- 8 Simple Rules originally aired on ABC and reruns can still be seen weekdays on ABC Family at 1:00 p.m. / 12:00 c.
~ Gemma Teller Morrow – Sons of Anarchy – 2008-present
Taking on a completely different, dramatic role as Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, which is currently airing on FX, she is described as “Jax’s force-of-nature mother.” Even only having recently checked this show out, I would still agree with that assessment. She is one incredibly tough lady who has a fierce love for her son, grandson, and husband.
Admittedly, I was initially resistant to checking this show out, but what started out as a vague decision to see what all the buzz was about, turned into watching two back-to-back episodes and then scouring the web for more. Even with only two episodes under my belt, I can tell you that this show has made its way onto my already buzzing reoccurring DVR list.
Before you go diving into this show, though, be forewarned that this is not anything remotely resembling warm and fuzzy. The show is described as,
“An adrenalized drama with darkly comedic undertones that explores a notorious outlaw motorcycle club’s (MC) desire to protect its livelihood while ensuring that their simple, sheltered town of Charming, California remains exactly that, Charming…Behind the MC’s familial lifestyle and legally thriving automotive shop is a ruthless and illegally thriving arms business. The seduction of money, power, and blood.” -FX
Each episode comes with a MA (Mature Audience) warning due to the language and violence.
- Sons of Anarchy is an FX original series and will be returning for its fourth season in September. The premiere date has not been released yet. Don’t miss an episode, check out FX’s schedule.
- Update: Season 4 ‘Sons of Anarchy’ official premiere date revealed
Yes, it’s impressive the wide-ranging characters that Katey Sagal has given us since wiggling her way into our hearts as Peg Bundy. Even more impressive is how seamlessly she’s delivered each role, leaving no doubt in our minds that this is one TV mom who can find her footing no matter the type of mom she’s portraying.
