As a parent we want to give our kids the greatest gift we possibly can. We wonder what story will they remember, what car would they like, or what kind of birthday party we should throw. Being a Christian parent we have a duty to give our kids a relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This relationship is the greatest gift we can give. “Train a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not turn away from it” Proverbs 22:6.
Our kids need to know that Jesus loves them. A verse to teach “I am your creator. You were in my care even before you were born” Isaiah 44:2. This verse will teach kids they were created for a reason and they have and always will be loved. As God is our creator, he is the creator of everything. Genesis is one of the best chapters for kids. They learn the beginning and that God creating the earth and everything that lives in it. It will give kids a greater appreciation for the land they walk on.
Conversation and prayer are crucial in daily life, not just the average before a meal or nighttime prayer. We have to teach kids that God is their best friend and he will always be there. Sometimes kids get shy, nervous or scared without their parents but as long as they know God and talk to God, they will never feel alone. “For God has said, I will never leave you; I will never abandon you” Hebrews 13:5. Also there are times when something is wrong and our kids don’t want to talk to us about it. Instead of keeping it all bottled up we can teach them to talk to God. This will relieve their feelings and get what they need off their chest, which will better them for the future. “Pray all the time” 1 Thessalonians 5:17
It is our spiritual will to leave the legacy of God behind. We are the leaders of the new generation who will be leading others. If we do not lead a godly life then how can we expect our kids to follow a godly life. Church is another habitat that will create more godly habits. At some point they might tell you otherwise, or they might leave the church, but the will always return to the church. “You are a member of God’s very own family, Citizens of God’s country, and you belong in god’s household with every other Christian” Ephesians 2:19
A baptism is a devotion to God and a cleansing of sin. We dedicate our kids as an infant because that is our choice. Our kids need to have the relationship to Jesus in order to make their decision to devote themselves to Christ. The best thing we can give is a big box filled with love and acceptance, wrapped with the knowledge of Christ and topped with a relationship with our Lord and Savior.
What greater gift can we give?
