Go to most any fitness center today, and you can see members in a yoga class twisting, bending, arching, and standing in powerful stances that represent openness and expansion of body and mind. These postures (asanas) along with breathing and meditation techniques of yoga are intended to help us transcend everyday life’s stresses and concerns, into blissful awareness and self control. What a gift!
Imagine this gift of yoga, discovered some 5,000 years ago by our brothers and sisters in India (some proponents would include Africa), and brought to our country within the last century or so. Possibly, yoga is one of the oldest wellness practices we are aware of. Truly a gift it is, with all of its benefits: physical, mental, and spiritual.
For all of it benefits, yoga has become popular in fitness centers, hospital rehab centers, senior centers, schools, holistic health facilities, and any place where the mind- body connection is emphasized. The Yoga Journal has estimated that some 15 million Americans practice Hatha Yoga.
In the midst of all of life’s stresses and concerns, our society has begun to see and use the help and healing that yoga can offer. With it you can feel more alive, alert, take deeper breaths, and feel more fully connected. Chance are you to will be saying, “What a gift”.
