The imperial Presidency of Barack Hussein Obama
For eight years, liberals howled that George W. Bush was acting like a dictator – an imperial President who did what he wanted, when he wanted.
But something odd happened in 2008 – America really did elect an imperial President.
Oddly enough, the thought of an Obama dictatorship is just fine with some on the left.
In May 2010, Hollywood director Woody Allen said it would be “cool” for Obama to have dictatorial powers “for a few years.”
Fox 411 reported:
So he could get things done without all the hassle of opposing views getting in the way.
In an interview published by Spanish language newspaper La Vanguardia (that we translated), Allen says “I am pleased with Obama. I think he’s brilliant. The Republican Party should get out of his way and stop trying to hurt him.”
But wait – there’s more!
The director said “it would be good…if he could be a dictator for a few years because he could do a lot of good things quickly.”
MSNBC host Ed Schultz also expressed a desire to see Obama act like a dictator. In June 2010, Matt Hadro of Newsbusters wrote:
When asked what President Obama needs to do to prove to Americans that his administration is on top of the Gulf cleanup, Ed Schultz pressed that the President needs to call the shots and go “dictator” in his dealings with BP.
“I think the President has to make it very clear to the American people tonight, Chris, that we’re not going to be stuck with the bill on this,” Schultz said about the BP oil spill.
“When does the President become a dictator on this?” Schultz asked in an outburst. “When does the President start really calling the shots and saying ‘This is the number. This is what you’re going to pay. We’re not going to let you off the hook.’?”
But while some on the left dream of an Obama dictatorship, others believe it is already happening through executive orders and regulatory actions.
Even before the 2010 election, the Administration signaled its intent to bypass Congress in order to enact radical left wing policies.
In February 2010, Liz Blaine wrote at NewsRealBlog:
On Friday White House chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel announced the President is preparing, “to get the job done.” Translation: Obama is tired of waiting for his agenda to be passed through Constitutional means. Signaling things to come, former campaign and current White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer gave notice, “In 2010, executive actions will play a key role in advancing the agenda.”
After being shellacked in the 2010 midterm elections, a left wing think tank issued a report that said Obama should use whatever tool he had at his disposal to bypass Congress, and by extension, the American people:
A report released by the Center for American Progress advises the President to use whatever executive powers he has, including his power as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to push his radical left wing agenda, despite GOP control of the House.
The report says, in part:
The U.S. Constitution and the laws of our nation grant the president significant authority to make and implement policy. These authorities can be used to ensure positive progress on many of the key issues facing the country through:
- Executive orders
- Agency management
- Convening and creating public-private partnerships
- Commanding the armed forces
How has that worked so far?
Consider the President’s actions regarding Libya.
Ignoring the War Powers Resolution, Obama has committed American military resources into a conflict supporting rebels attempting to overthrow the dictator Moammar Khaddafi.
While getting rid of a dictator is good, the President has ignored Congress’ demands that he obey the law and seek Congressional approval. Ron Paul and other Representatives have filed a lawsuit against Obama regarding the action, but even if a judge rules against the President, chances are he’ll simply ignore the order as he has done in the past.
According to the administration, U.S. forces are not technically engaged in hostilities, and approval is not required. Although the House has strongly expressed disapproval, funding for the action continues.
Ignoring laws and orders he doesn’t like is nothing new for Obama.
Acting as a one-man Supreme Court, Obama usurped the judicial branch and declared parts of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. Imagine the outrage if George Bush did that to a law he didn’t like.
A federal judge ruled Obamacare unconstitutional – but Obama and the Democrats are implementing the bill anyway.
In February, Judge Martin Feldman held the Obama Administration in contempt of court for refusing to obey an order lifting the moratorium on oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
His actions have not gone completely unnoticed by conservative lawmakers.
In April, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) told Fox News’ Greta van Susteren:
I am sick and tired of this class warfare, this Marxist, demagogic rhetoric that is coming from the President of the United States of America. It is not helpful for this country and it’s not going to move the ball forward as far as rectifying the economic situation in our country. And I’m not going to back away from telling what the truth is.
There’s a great depth to my conviction, and part of my conviction is telling the truth. I don‘t think it’s very presidential when Barack Hussein Obama refers to my colleague, Paul Ryan, as a simple little accountant, either. So I think that when you look at what a community organizer is turning out to be, it does seem to be like a low-level socialist agitator.
Earlier, West decried what he called Obama’s “third world dictator-like arrogance” while appearing on the Laura Ingraham radio program.
The administration is also working to grant a de facto amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants through executive order and regulatory fiat. But at least one member of the House is fighting back.
The Hill reports:
The Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee is crafting a bill that would temporarily freeze the Obama administration’s power to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants.
The measure is in response to a memo issued by the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week that approved a broader breadth of discretion for agency officials when considering whether to deport someone through the Secure Communities program.
“The Obama administration cannot continue to pick and choose which laws it will enforce,” said Rep Lamar Smith (R-TX) in a statement.
“It is outrageous that they have put illegal immigrants and their liberal political base ahead of the American people,” he said.
How far will the President go with his quest to become America’s first real dictator?
The President has already shown his disdain for the Constitution he is sworn to protect and defend.
In 2008, America elected a President who would like to be king. In 2012, voters should see to it he becomes a one-term President.
