Fans watched The Biggest Loser Tuesday night as Olivia won the title of The Biggest Loser tonight, and Deni won the at-home prize. Many fans are commenting about how enjoyable it was to see such dedicated players at the end, rather than manipulation and game play. Quite a few fans noticed that Rulon Gardner was not at the finale, and are wondering why he was absent.
Rulon quit the game just a few weeks before the final group was determined. He had been talking about being ready to leave, and at the weigh-in stated that he was leaving for personal reasons. He seemed to feel that he had learned everything he needed to learn on the ranch and thought he could continue at home. He declined to share what his “personal reasons” were for leaving.
After leaving the show, Rulon declined to do any post-show interviews. He did release a brief statement, but there were no further details as to why he left the show. He simply said, “Once I reached by goal and started feeling like my old self, I felt compelled to return home and support my wife, Kamie, in the ongoing management of our personal and professional affairs.”
At the time, NBC shared with Reality TV World that Gardner would not be eligible to win the $100,000 at-home weigh-in since he chose to quit the show. NBC did not elaborate on Gardner’s decision to leave the show. NBC said at that point there had been no decision made about whether Gardner would attend the finale. What is not clear now is whether Gardner was excluded by the network or whether Gardner made the choice himself not to attend.
Many people were rooting for Rulon throughout the show, and were disappointed in his decision to quit. What did you think? Did you think he had legitimate reasons for leaving, or was he just looking for excuses to be done? The Biggest Loser has wrapped up another season, but will return in the fall. The show has announced that Jillian is leaving, but Bob, Cara and Brett will be back. They will also be joined by tennis star Anna Kournikova, who is replacing Michaels. The Biggest Loser will return to Tuesday nights on NBC, Channel 12 in the Scottsdale area.
Update: NBC has released an additional statement regarding Rulon’s absence – read here for more details.
