The classic, Team Fortress 2, originally added in the infamous Orange Box, has gone free to play, opening the game up to all past potential customers, who were either skeptical at the time to purchase it, or simply lacked the funds. This huge move by Valve, creators of Team Fortress 2 and the Orange Box, brings joy to many new players, and rage to the veterans, who feel cheated that they aren’t getting reimbursed for having bought the game at full price. Nevertheless, this will definitely bring more traffic to a amazing sandbox game.
Team Fortress 2 was always known for their silly customization of hats, guns and other items which cost quite a bit of money, even going to the extent of giving players secret mystery boxes, only unlockable by paying $3 for a one-time-use key. Many players found this to be a very big turn off to the game, but just like League of Legends, introducing real world money only made you obtain your desired virtual entity faster, and were 100% accessible to obtaining without paying any money, so it’s all personal choice.
Now, everyone knows the saying “nothing in the world is free”, and this fact is true for TF2. When you obtain the game for “free”, you are given a account status of “Free”, which is more of a trial account. Now, you can upgrade your account to a “Premium”, which is what players who paid received, by simply buying one thing out of the store, but here is where Valve gets you. Sure, you can just buy a $1 item, and get all the Premium benefits (shown here), but what I found by making the purchase, the only way to pay for it is to pay with your steam wallet, which you have to fill with funds, the minimum deposit being $5, so if your unlucky like me and have no funds in that wallet, you will end up paying $5, which isn’t all that bad. I practically bought TF2 for $5, and received 5 starter supply kits for $1 each, which contained around 17 items (which bought individually would of cost $25+).
Still can’t pay to upgrade your account to premium? Don’t worry, all you are really missing out on is the items portion, which I would say is about 10% of the game. You still can play the same roles, on the same servers, and same maps as everyone else. Besides, you still will receive random items, so you won’t be stuck with the same default setup forever.
This deal is definitely one that everyone should take advantage of, not many chances like this come along in the gaming universe, and TF2 being the amazing game that it is, we should all pay homage to the bounty given to us by the gaming gods.
