I’m not a weathergirl by any means (and I’m not sure those chickies seen on local TV are not certified weather experts either) but it seems like the Cali summer sun beams are stronger here. I mean, they don’t call ’em California Sun-Dried Raisins for nothin’. We have miles and miles of sunny beaches, and tons of us enjoy our summers biking along the strand, surfing, whale watching, picnicing and participating in endless happy hours by the beach and pool, so sun protection becomes a big part of our LA lives.
By now, most of use use sunscreen on a daily basis. So, you think you got it covered, right?
ALERT: Your suncreen CAN harm you!!! So, you have to stay informed and make sure you are not putting harmful ingredients on your skin. The FDA does a major slack-off job with this stuff….and companies think they can get away with using cheap ingredients that HARM your body. Yes, even the brands EVERYbody’s heard of and uses.
It’s time to get informed.
Good thing there’s a group called the Environmental Working Group. They’ve come out with 2011 Sunscreen Guide, which makes it easy to choose SAFE sunscreen.
Now, this may shock you:
They analyzed more than 600 beach and sport sunscreens and found that they could only recommend one in five sunscreens for this summer! The rest either don’t protect enough or contain hazardous ingredients that don’t belong on your skin.
There are sunscreen ingredients to avoid like the plague. A few are oxybenzone, which is a hormone disruptor and Padimate-O and Parsol 1789, two chemicals which actually have the potential to harm DNA when reacting with sunlight! How do we know what’s SAFE? Best to keep this Sunscreen guide as your sunscreen bible:

The cool thing about the site is that you can type in your current suncreen and it will tell you how safe it is. They use a hazard number. The best and recommended products are ranked 0 to 2. Products ranked 3-6 are “Caution” and those ranked 7-10 are “AVOID AVOID AVOID.”
Look up your sunscreen.
Find out their top-rated sunscreens here to make sure you’re protected this summer.
They’ve even got a Hall of Shame for sunscreens too.
So, PLEASE use sunscreen and get one that these guys deem relatively safe. Unprotected exposure to the sun – even a little every day – builds up up and results in “photoaging.” It’s never too late to prevent further sun damage.
And remember those sun-dried raisins? Most of the wrinkles around our eyes aren’t just from aging — they’re from SQUINTING. So make sure your peeper are protected in the sun this summer with some good sunglasses too.
