Norma Kamali’s swimsuit design is featured on the cover of the July issue of Vogue.
Who is this designer? Norma Kamali was born in 1946 and set out to be a painter. Her mother was against her career choice, so she opted for fashion illustration. Kamali went on to study at FIT in New York City.
Kamali isn’t just a designer. She is more of a fashion innovator. She does not just design or recycle looks, she creates new ideas in design.
Kamali is credited with many design innovations including the ‘sleeping bag’ coat and the ‘parachute’ collection. The sleeping bag coat came from Kamali being inspired to create a coat based on a rolled sleeping bag. The parachute designs were made out of real silk parachutes.
Kamali caught my eye with her figure hugging lycra jumpsuits and blazers. Kamali’s swimwear has influenced the industry since her first collections in 1974. The looks are super sexy and often times a bit retro. The mesh swimsuits combine both elements.
Kamali received a place in Coty’s Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievements in women’s fashion. Her designs are also on permanent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
While Kamali’s designs are not inexpensive, they are truly unique. Kamali is still going strong. She is a designer who withstood the test of time by staying true to her vision.
