I had the pleasure of meeting Teri Konieczny, Group Exercise director for Gold’s Gym, in Granite Bay, on June 22, 2011, for a brief interview.
Teri walked into Gold’s, as I sat in anticipation of her arrival, full of personality. She asked, “Are you Melody” with a welcoming smile. I felt her energy and her ability to make me feel comfortable right away. This is an important quality for someone in her field.
We made our way to her office and sat down for a chat. Originally, I wanted to write an article and focus on the aerobic classes offered at the Granit Bay location of Gold’s Gym. I started by asking Teri about her background and I knew my focus was going to shift when Teri said, “I actually have an interesting bio.” She is correct! My pen couldn’t keep up with her fascinating story.
Teri hails from Woodbridge, Virginia. Little did she realize her career in fitness would flourish when she began lifting weights at the age of 19 years old.
At the age of 22 years she began working for the Secret Service,in 1995, and enjoyed a 7 year career. During this phase of her stint with the Secret Service she became certified with The Cooper Institute, in 1996, and began conducted quarterly fitness tests for uniformed officers in the Secret Service. The physical tests she administered included pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, flexibility and mile and a half run.
In 2000, Teri achieved her Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) certification and worked part-time as a personal trainer. She started work with Gold’s Gym, in Virginia, in 2002, as a Group Exercise Director. Also, in 2002, Teri was a trainer for the Active Duty Fitness for Women organization until 2009. This was a busy time for her because she also developed the Group Exercise program for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 2007-2009.
Aside from her professional accolades, Teri also achieved a few personal accomplishments. In 2006 she won the USA Power Lifting (USAPL) Raw Bench Press state record in 114lb weight class by bench pressing 131 pounds.
“RAW bench press is done without supportive sleeves. The weight bar is lowered and touches below the chest with a second of holding before the signal is given to lift. The lift starts from the bottom, straight up.”
Just a short year later, as she was going through a personal transition, her physique changed. Although her body was still muscular, she shredded down and decided to enter the Figure Competition, sponsored by National Gym Association (NGA), in 2007, and placed second.
Teri moved to California, in 2009, and you can find Teri working as a personal trainer or overseeing the Group Exercise program at the Gold’s Gym, in Granite Bay, as well as teaching 5 to 6 types of classes a week which includes kickboxing, Crosstrain, spinning, and body sculpt.
As we were finishing the interview, Teri was preparing for her weekly Crosstain class. When I asked her about the class, she explained her intent was to change the format of this class each time the class meets.
“I want to offer something different every class. Some days we may not do cardio training but other days may include all cardio training. The other day I had 17 people in class so I divided the group between the Spin Room and the treadmills. After 10 minutes of cardio, I had them do squats, push-ups and other floor-work training. I also like to go outside to keep them guessing.”
Other classes offered at the Granite Bay location:
