What does religion mean to you? And what does spirituality mean? Are they the same? Lately both are confused and used indiscriminately yet both are different and can overlap. So what do they mean to you?
The gist is most people use the words religion and spirituality to mean the same thing. What one considers spirituality, another sees religious as the same. While both have different meanings, to make things more complicated, they can overlap and create confusion.
Spirituality Versus Religious. The oxford defines religion as: “the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods” while spirituality as: “of, relating to, or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things” It isn’t hard to see how both can be confused. I can be spiritual but not religious, and vice versa. I can be a church goer and not feel it affects my spirit. I can be a spiritualist and not feel a or the God controls it all.
In essence, spirituality strives to make sense for a person in the world they live in. It tries to answer metaphysical questions, such as: “Who am I?”, “Why am I here?”, etc. Spirituality can be found in the deeper levels of religion but usually encompasses many approaches and lies in the fundamental of understanding relation to the Universe by observation means.
Religious usually means to follow a set of protocols, usually in the form of prayer and faith.
So in the end, are you a religious person or a spiritual one? How do you make the difference? And how about you Buddhists, do you consider yourself spiritual, religious or something else?
