The month of May has been a tough month for some of America’s most famous athletes. A few weeks ago, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was removed from Boxing’s top 10 pound-for-pound rankings due to inactivity and on Monday, Tiger Woods fell out of the Top 10 in the World Golf Rankings. On Tuesday, the Associated press reported that Woods’ recent injuries and poor golf play has caused his fall out of the top 10 for the first time since 1997. However, his dramatic decline can be traced back to his marital scandal in late 2009. And for Mayweather Jr., his name has become synonymous with scandals and controversy.
Woods took an indefinite leave of absence in December 2009 after more than one dozen women claimed to have sexual relationships with Tiger. Woods’ wife ended up leaving him and getting over $100 million in the divorce settlement. Eventually, Woods would return in April 2010 but would go on to lose his #1 ranking 6 months later. Currently, Woods has not won a major tournament in 18 months and sits 12th in the World rankings, his lowest position in over 14 years.
Mayweather was in the top 10 P4P rankings for nearly two years since his to Boxing in September 2009 when he fought Juan Manuel Marquez after retiring for a little over 1 year. Floyd last fought on May 1, 2010 against Shane Mosley and won via unanimous decision. Unfortunately, Floyd has not fought since then and his boxing future is uncertain at best.

Currently, Floyd is dealing with 5 separate court cases that could see him land in jail for over 30 years. Floyd has allegedly assaulted and/or threatened three security guards, a night club bouncer, his ex-girlfriend and two of his children.
Recently, Floyd said that he will fight when he feels like fighting. Unfortunately, Floyd hasn’t given any indications of upcoming fights despite fighters like Sergio Martinez, Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao calling him out.
5 years ago, Woods and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were heralded athletes at the top of their respective sports. Unfortunately, they have not only fallen from the rankings but they have also fallen out of the good graces of the American public.
