Finding a place that serves meat and vegetable plates can sometimes be a challenge. Fortunately, persons in the Ryland and Central areas of Madison County can find a good plate lunch five days a week at the Ryland Texaco, one block west of Central Elementary School on Ryland Pike.
Plate lunches cornerstone of offerings on menu
The cornerstone of the menu is the plate lunches offered by the deli. These include fried catfish, chicken wings, and sometimes another meat choice, with vegetables include corn, green beans, and turnip greens. All plate lunches come with homemade cornbread, which is world famous. The bread has a crumbly texture which makes it perfect for crumbling up in beans (which is how I like it). The meat portion size is LARGE, and very delicious. The vegetable serving size is also big, and the vegetables are cooked the old fashioned way (potatoes and bacon in the green beans, for example).
Barbecue also available
During the week, barbecue pork, chicken, and ribs are sometimes available. The barbecue rub and sauce are delicious, and the meat is tender and filling. The barbecue items can be made into a sandwich, or plate lunches can also be made from the barbecue menu.
Salads handmade; dressing choice needed
Garden salads and chef salads are made to order. The chef salad ordered contained ham, turkey, onion, olives, lettuce, carrots, cheese, croutons, and tomatoes. There is only one improvement I would make in this area–and that would be to offer a variety of salad dressings. The day we were at the deli, the only dressing choice was Hidden Valley Ranch. Otherwise, the salad was awesome.
Homemade deserts and sandwiches also available
Some days, a homemade desert (such as a pie, cobbler, or banana pudding) may be offered. When deserts are available, they are the perfect complement to a good meal. Deli sandwiches are also available during the week, and those are made to order.
Of course, the deli also has typical convenience store deli food, as well. This includes biscuits during breakfast hours and burgers, chicken sandwiches, and hot dogs during lunch.
Ryland Texaco is located on Ryland Pike between Dug Hill Road and Moontown Road, one block west of Central Elementary School and about ten miles east of downtown Huntsville. The deli is open five days a week, Monday through Friday.
