Sick of your skin looking dull and lifeless? Tired of looking 5 years older than you really are? There are some tried and true simple ways to achieve a more youthful glow that take only minutes a day and can offer significant change in your appearance. After all, beauty may be only skin deep, but your exterior appearance is the first information others receive about you. Do you want them to think, “Wow, she is stressed, tired and overworked?” Or, “Wow, she is glowing, energetic and confident?” No brainer, right? Right. So, in order to achieve this transformation you will need the following items that can all be purchased at your local drug store:
- A gentle cleanser (such as Cetaphil or Basis)
- An inexpensive exfoliator (such as St. Ives Apricot Scrub)
- A basic moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher (such as Olay Regnerist Day)
- A rich eye cream with retinol (such as ROC Intensive Moisturizer) Note: if you are sensitive to retinol products or other vitamin A derivitives, opt for a basic eye moisturizer instead.
- A makeup highlighter or luminizer (such as Revlon Dayspa Illuminator or Fresh Face Lustre)
- A rosy cream blush (any brand, non-powder, one of my faves: Tarte Dollface)
Ok, so once you have your basics you can get down to business. When you roll out of bed, shower to increase blood flow and reduce any facial/eye swelling by splashing with cold water prior to stepping out. While in the shower, wash your face with the gentle cleanser and splash rinse. Alternate this cleansing routine with your exfoliating cleanser at least twice per week to clear dead skin cells and keep skin looking new and fresh. Once out of the shower, only dab your face dry (avoid rubbing or drying completely). While face is still slightly damp, mix a pea-sized amount of your basic moisturizer with SPF protection with equal parts highlighter and apply. SPF is your best friend. Don’t forget that! This mix will help you achieve a sheer and slightly luminous glow (sans the glitter…we aren’t 15 ladies!)
Next, tap on your eye cream below your eyes using your ring finger to ensure even and gentle pressure. Once absorbed, use a creamy concealer to dot under your eyes, on your forehead (between eyes) and along your nasio-labal folds. Tap lightly to blend. The color should be one shade lighter than your regular skin tone. This highlighting will diminish the look of dark circles and shadows and make those areas pop and appear even and plump. Using a large, fluffy brush, apply bronzer to your temples, down the bridge or your nose and lightly on cheeks and chin (where the sun normally hits).
Finally, apply your creamy blush to the apples of the cheeks, blending out and up toward temples. Use a tap of your cream blush for your lips and top with a clear gloss. Apply your favorite mascara. To complete the look and add a final pop of freshness, take your highlighter and dab on the top of your cheekbones, below your brow arch and finally to your cupids bow above your top lip. This will accentuate those areas and give the appearance of flawless glowing skin. Now, glow get ’em!
