Raquel Stucky, 35, of Pretty Prairie Kansas has been training for the Grandma’s Marathon on June 18th in Duluth Minnesota for about a year to qualify for the U.S.Olympic Marathon team trials. To qualify into the “A” standard, Stucky has to earn the time of 2 hours and 39 minutes or faster for the 26.2 mile distance. To qualify into the “B” standard, she has to run 2 hours and 46 minutes or faster.
Stucky is putting in 70-80 miles a week of running to prepare for the Grandma’s marathon along with doing core work. Stucky ran a personal record of 2:49:11 at the PF Chang Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon in January averaging 6:27 minutes per mile and finishing 6th overall female out of a field of over 2200. But to qualify for the trials she has to shed off about 3 minutes.
Raquel Stucky first started running when she was just 12 years old. Her Dad and two brothers had competed in college and Stucky carried it on by also running cross country at South Western Collage. She also ran the 5000 and 10000 in track. Stucky’s first ever marathon time was 2 hours and 58 minutes.
Stucky decided to try and qualify for the Olympic Marathon trials when her friend John Alewine asked her if she would be interested in a training program. Alewine had known Stucky’s past in marathons so after thinking it over she said “Why not!” and Alewine became Stucky’s coach.
Today, Stucky is working at First Gear, a running store in downtown Wichita, and training to run faster than she’s ever run a marathon before. Grandma’s marathon should prove to be an excellent venue for Stucky to try and make an Olympic marathon trials time. Each year Grandma’s Marathon attracts over 120 elite athletes from around the globe with a prize purse of $40,000. Grandma’s Marathon is a qualifying race for the men’s and women’s 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Last year, Deba Buzunesh of Ethiopia ran a time of 2:31:35 for first place overall female and $12,000 in cash.
The men’s and women’s 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be held in Houston on January 14, 2012. The trials are just a day prior to the 40thanniversary of the Houston Marathon. The races will determine the three men and three women who will represent the United States in the marathon at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
