If you believe in the mind, body, spirit connection, indulge in the ancient healing of sacred smudge healing. Smudging can be dated back to the Native Americans, notably the Mazatec Shamans that used sage for healing during spirit journey rituals.
The word sage itself – salvia – comes from the Latin word salvare. It means “To Heal.” When burning, the smoke attaches itself to negative energy. As the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it to regenerate into something more positive. Sage is usually harvested in the desert country of California, Arizona and Colorado, but can be purchased at any holistic store or online.
During those low energy days or days when everyone or everything becomes and energy vampire, simply prepare a make shift sanctuary and smudge yourself into a more tranquil state. You could accomplish this by choosing a small secluded space such as a closet, pantry, basement, or bathroom where the air can be contained, yet circulated. Let this be your private “smoke space” where you can ultimately spin your seven chakra’s into synchronicity. In doing this through a meditative state, we are cleansing our spirit.
To begin, light your sage smudge stick and once burning, blow out until it smolders (think incense) and let burn in an abalone shell or ashtray for about 20-30 minutes. Remember to set a clear intention and to give thanks to God/Creator/Universe for their guidance. If you feel so inclined, add some soothing music or a quiet fan to make your experience more enjoyable.
Smudging is also an effective way to clear out or bless a space such as an apartment or house. You could attempt to smudge a space before moving in, to clear all the stale, insipid energies that were left behind from the last tenant. Also, if you have had guests over and felt that they left unfavorable wake, smudge the area that they occupied to clear out and negative residue.
If you are looking for a professional to help you smudge away adverse energies, Hilary Loewenstein of Hilary’s Mindful Living in Germantown, MD can help.
Hilary has been smudging homes for about two years and teaches others how to clear away unwanted energies. She regularly smudges herself and if things have been going wrong in her home or if her children get sick, she will definitely smudge when she feels the need to.
Previously, she has smudged a client’s house twice, once before the owners move and once after all of their household items were set up. The reason is because the furniture was contained in a storage unit and the second smudging was needed to neutralize the environment.
When working on a client’s house, Hilary can feel the areas that need the most clearing.
“You can feel what areas are stickier. When I am picking up negative energy there is a tightening in my throat and you get that bad vibe feeling,” Hilary said.
To start smudging an area yourself, start at the doorway and work in a clockwise direction. Cleanse the door frame, the walls, and any window frames. Pay particular attention to corners and the top of the walls.
Like any other spiritual experience, make it your own. There are variations to the smudging experience. You may use cedar, sweet grass, or lavender smudge sticks. It is also traditional to use a bird’s feather to brush the smoke over the person or space being blessed to “fluff up” the auric field.
The most important objective is to purify and cleanse blocked energy fields. If the energy is not cleansed, dis-ease manifests in the physical body. The clearing starts in the spiritual body with intention and a little smoke to promote peace and a state of centeredness.
