Today (May 13, 2011) marks the opening of Screen Gems’ ‘Priest’ staring Paul Bettany and ‘City of Bones’ star Lily Collins. ‘Priest’ is about a priest (Bettany) who goes against the church to fight a legion of vampires in efforts to save his kidnapped niece (Collins.) ‘Priest’ is also directed by ‘City of Bones’ director Scott Stewart.
It was reported earlier in an interview that director Scott Stewart wanted Lily Collins to play Clary Fray in ‘City of Bones,’ the first movie in ‘The Mortal Instruments’ franchise because of her performance in ‘Priest.’ So, what similarities does Clary Fray and Collins’ ‘Priest’ character, Lucy Pace have in common?
First of all, they are both thrown into a world that they don’t believe exists. Clary Fray learns in ‘City of Bones’ that the things that go bump in the night really exist. Lucy in ‘Priest’ believes that her world is safe from the previous. Both Clary and Lucy take a stand for themselves. Collins didn’t get a chance to show her fighting skills out too much in ‘Priest’ but I can definitely see some “Clary” in her. I’m excited to see her use a stele like she used that knife.
Overall, I feel like ‘Priest’ was rushed in some areas and didn’t go into enough detail in others. I did enjoy the chemistry, even though it was slight, between Paul Bettany and Maggie Q. Though she didn’t have too much screen time I felt that Collins did a great a job with what she was given. Her attitude and implied disobedience towards her family at the beginning is how I envision Clary Fray being at the beginning of ‘City of Bones.’ I do feel there is so much more to the ‘Priest’ story and I hope that the sequel that was implied is made.
As for the direction, I really liked the vampires. I could see this same look portraying well into the demons in ‘City of Fallen Angels.’ I do feel like pacing dragged in some areas but that is more of a script issue than a directing issue.
Lily Collins is quickly becoming a star to watch. Next Movie even named her as one of the top breakout stars of the Summer. Next she will be filming ‘Brother’s Grimm: Snow White’ where she plays the title role. She will be starring along side Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer. Nathan Lane recently joined the cast. Learn more about the film here.
We will next see Collins in ‘Abduction’ along side her off-screen beau, Taylor Lautner. ‘Abduction’ hits theaters this September.
Collins’ recently put ‘The Mortal Instruments’ fans at ease by saying that filming for ‘City of Bones’ will happen this year. Screen Gems is taking their time in casting the male lead of Jace Wayland. Fans should be happy at the care that the studio is giving this project to make sure the actor is the right fit for the role. Clare recently revealed that they have begun the search for the right actor to portray Simon Lewis. Read what fans are hoping to find in someone to play Simon, Alec, Isabelle and Valentine.
