Bagley, Minn – Officer Larry Peterson of the Bagley Police Department is in mourning – his two dogs, one of whom worked with him as a K9 tracking dog, were shot and killed.
Officer Peterson’s working dog, Copper a Lab/Hound mix, was rescued from a city pound by Peterson. The other victim, Peterson’s personal dog, a Lab/Basset Hound mix named Sally, was also rescued from a humane society.
Sally and Copper escaped from their yard in late April. The Peterson’s had moved recently, and the dogs managed to escape from their new yard that fateful day….
Their bodies weren’t discovered until May 10; approximately 5 miles from the Peterson home, the bodies of both dogs were discovered on a country road.
According to Officer Peterson, it appears that the dogs had been killed shortly after they escaped from his yard – and it appears that someone moved their bodies from where they were actually shot and killed.
Currently, there are no suspects in the case, but an investigation is underway by the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.
Officer Peterson has made the decision to stay out of the search for the person responsible – in an effort to keep his personal feelings separate.
As would be expected in a tragic situation such as this, Peterson’s emotions fluctuate between anger, and great sadness….
According to Peterson, both dogs were gentle – there is no reason that someone should have shot them, and he is baffled by the act of outright cruelty.
Losing Copper leaves an especially large hole in Peterson’s life – the pair lived and worked side by side for 7 years….knowing that his life was cruelly stolen doesn’t make that tremendous loss any easier.
Both dogs were a part of Peterson’s family – both have left a hole in his heart.
Rest in Peace Copper and Sally.
Sincere condolences to the Peterson family and to the Bagley Police Department for their tremendous loss.
