Thursday House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi made the case for Democrats taking back the House in 2012. According to Pelosi, Democrats will win the House back by reminding voters of Republican efforts to eradicate Medicare as we know it.
Pelosi’s remarks about future prospects for Democrats in 2012 immediately generated a great deal of social media buzz. Posts on both Twitter and Facebook reveal a Democratic base excited about 2012 prospects.
Given recent Republican efforts to abolish Medicare, and the public’s sharp rejection of such efforts, Democrats feel justified in their optimistic outlook for the upcoming 2012 elections.
Pelosi made her optimistic remarks about the upcoming 2012 elections in an interview with ABC. Pelosi told ABC that any cuts to senior Medicare benefits are “absolutely” off the table. About Medicare, and Democratic political strategy for 2012, Pelosi said:
“What we want is to change the view that the Republicans have that it is OK to abolish Medicare [and] to make seniors pay more for less while we give tax breaks to big oil. That’s not a formula that I think works for the middle class.”
“When you talk about Medicare, the first thing I would do if I ruled the world would be to allow the secretary of HHS to negotiate for lower prices. That would save tens of billions of dollars. The last place we need to go — we don’t ever have to go there — is to what the Republicans are doing: Eliminate Medicare [and] make seniors pay more for less as you give tax breaks to big oil and say that’s how we have to reduce the deficit. We don’t subscribe to that.”
The winning strategy for Democrats is clear: Remind voters Republicans want to abolish Medicare as we know it.
Democrats are banking on voters sharing their belief that giving tax breaks to big oil, other large corporations, and the nation’s most wealthy individuals, while cutting services to the most needy among us, is not only inhumane, but bad politics, and bad government.
