Women with cancer in Richmond and across the nation will benefit from the generous contribution from Susan G. Kormen for the Cure®.
PRESS RELEASE: The Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF), sometimes the only resource standing between paying for a woman’s life-saving breast cancer treatment and her possible financial ruin, has just received a $2 million contribution from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization announced today.
The latest investment by Komen for the Cure will provide pharmaceutical co- payment help to more than 850 breast cancer patients nationwide and will also allow PAF to directly reach out to African American and Hispanic/Latina breast cancer patients to let them know about resources now available to them.
“When I received your letter, it brought tears to my eyes. I have a heart full of gratitude,” said breast cancer patient Monica Roberts upon receiving information about what PAF could provide during her treatment. “PAF’s letter brings me a sense of relief financially as I’ve struggled to purchase prescribed medication.”
Breast cancer was one of the first three diseases funded in 2004 when PAF launched its Co-Pay Relief (CPR) Program. Since then, PAF has assisted 8,377 breast cancer patients through that program and allocated more than $16.4 million to cover unmet pharmaceutical expenses for these patients.
“We’re gratified we can help mitigate a desperate situation to some degree,” said Mollie Williams, Komen’s director of community health programs. “But one look at the numbers tells all of us how important it is for everyone to step
– more -up to help these women out during what undoubtedly is the most frightening time in their lives.”
“This contribution from Susan G. Komen for the Cure couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Beth Patterson, PAF President, Mission Delivery. “Last year we directly assisted in excess of 83,000 patients. That’s a 50 percent increase over 2009. Issues related to medical debt continue to be the number one access barrier for our patients.”
