Despite the fact that the 2010 Census states that Ft. Lauderdale has 79,826 men, it is increasingly difficult to find a good one. That is why many women are turning to the internet to find their soul-mate. The internet removes the need to sit at a bar, be hit on by sleazy guys you would never consider dating, and spending large amounts on drinks to entertain you while you wait for your prince charming.
Internet dating: totally hot or not? Society today is incredibly technologically linked in; either to cell phones, or internet, or internet ON cell phones, people are constantly connected. So is online dating the new “it” thing or is it just creepy? Many people find it hard to just approach someone they find attractive, however sending an email or “poking” someone is a much easier way to say “Hey, I think you’re pretty cool let’s get to know each other better.” The internet makes dating easier, especially since there is a huge variety of dating sites available depending on what you are looking for.
There’s my personal fave, Hot or Not, where you can rate people on a scale based on attraction, send virtual gifts, and initiate conversation with someone you feel is equal in physical attractiveness. Now obviously this site is not set by a deeper emotional connection, but hey at least it gets you into the game. Then next comes Match.com where you can view your “matches” based on your listed likes and dislikes, as well as your preference for body type, number of children, smoker or non-smoker, etc….it’s like you get to build your own man….only remember…that guys who states he’s 6’1″ and muscular….may really be closer to 5’7″ and a little fluffy. But in addition to creating your own designer man-bag, this site allows you to “wink,” “like,” email and call your matches adding at least some deeper level of emotional connection than just ranking someone on a scale of 1 to 10. The next site is one of the most popular, eHarmony. This site is said to be one of the most accurate in choosing your mate. It uses a “29 dimensions model” to match couples based on different elements of compatibility that have been found to create successful relationships. It uses your responses to questions to narrow down your potential partners to a small group of highly compatible individuals. However, this is also one site where getting in touch with your future soul-mate will never be free. So you may find your True Love, but it’s gonna cost you. The last site is for a very specific group of girls. Sugar Daddy Online dating is aimed towards both men and women who want to find a successful, affluent, ambitious, confident, and experienced partner. Yes this is a real site, and no there is nothing illegal about it! It is just a site to help those ambitious girls or guys find themselves a partner who would be monetarily beneficial.
So as you can see online dating has become a large part of our society today. Whether it is joining one of these sites, or any of the hundreds of others, or just meeting people through Facebook or MySpace people are using technology more and more to meet potential partners. However, remember, just because you feel like you really know someone you “talk” to online, or even on the phone DOES NOT mean meeting them alone and not telling anyone where you are going or who you are meeting is safe! Whether you are meeting someone from online, or or even just hitting up some of the more popular Lauderdale clubs and bars to find your mate, make sure that you have a fully-charged working cell phone with you, make sure you have told at LEAST one person who you are going out with, where you will be going, and when you should be back. If possible, meet in a group or at least in a very public well-lit location and it is never bad to carry some sort of self-protection such as pepper spray in case the date takes a nasty turn.
