“You know what they say in football, defense wins championships,” said Big Steve sipping on his Java during our morning coffee at Starbucks on Brand Boulevard in Glendale:” That’s why I believe Mayweather will beat Pacquiao. Will they ever fight?”
Floyd Mayweather believes it is not if but when he fights and beats Pacquiao“Once I get to him and beat him, it’s going to be an excuse,” said Mayweather, 34, when I asked him about Pacquiao:” They are going to bring another fighter and say, well Floyd can’t beat him. When Diego (Corrales) was undefeated, they said Floyd can’t beat him, and then they said he had weight problems. There is always an excuse. And then once I beat Pacquiao, because he is going to take the test, they are going to say, you know what… And if a fighter is clean, which Manny Pacquiao says he is a clean fighter. Top Rank and Pacquiao said, Floyd this is what we want from you. I said it’s not a problem at all. I’ll do whatever you all want. All I ask you to do not just you but both to take the test. He said OK, I’ll test for four weeks, but another four weeks or twenty one days; I don’t want to test at all. But once again this is the guy that you are all praising, the guy that beat all my leftovers, a guy that beat drained De La Hoya.”
Just like it is very difficult to deal with Mayweather in a squared circle, it is equally as challenging trying to win an argument when Floyd presents his case. And while a Pacquiao, civil, defamation of character law suit is looming over Mayweather’s head, Floyd is making a case in public opinion that he is the best fighter on the planet.
“ I got to ask you this question,” said Mayweather (41-0,25KO’S) during his interview in Los Angeles:” How can a guy get beat and have a draw and still get the Fighter of the Decade, but if another fighter can go for a decade and a half without one loss and not be known as the best fighter.”
Manny Pacquiao has won a Fighter of a decade award after he moved up and ravaged through all the stars in welterweight division as if they were just ordinary fighters, but the humble champion is not worried about accolades.
“I just want to make people happy,” said Pacquiao.
Floyd Mayweather does not see it that way. Being born into a boxing family, with his father and uncle, professional prize fighters, Floyd believes that he was born for this and should be considered a pugilistic royalty.
“You got to realize, I started early, “said Mayweather:”It only took me a year to become a world champion. I started at nineteen and in about a year and a half I became a world champion. And when the belt switched hands from all the different champions, Floyd Mayweather always said, I am going to be the last man standing.”
Floyd Mayweather simply believes that he can not be beat, not today, not in any era, not ever. “Pacquiao and Marquez fight right,” continued Mayweather:” Both of them, two future hall of famers. And I respect Pacquiao for fighting my left over’s and getting into Hall of Fame. Let me see how Floyd do against them first, then I’ll fight them. Let me see the guy who is beat up, then I’ll fight him; no guys that are young, strong champions. I’m saying; bring me young, strong champions.”
Floyd will get his wish, facing a young, strong WBC welterweight champion, Victor Ortiz on September 17th at the Mecca of boxing, MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“Once I get to him and beat him, it’s going to be an excuse,” said Mayweather again. But there will be no excuses from Victor Ortiz’s camp. They predict young Ortiz will be the first man to beat Mayweather.
