While a month of sleep-away camp may not be in your budget this year, your child can still enjoy active, outdoor play in the fresh mountain air. Based on quality programming, well-trained counselors, and small group sizes, here are my top picks for a good, old-fashioned summer camp experience.
Colorado Mountain Ranch: As close as it gets to sleep-away camp without the letters home.
Nestled in the historic mining town of Gold Hill, the Colorado Mountain Ranch offers old-school, confidence-building outdoor summer activities for children ages 7-16, in order to connect them with nature, themselves and others.
Activities include horseback riding, mountainboarding (like skateboarding, but on trails), team-building ropes courses, arts and crafts, dramatics, gymnastics and trampoline, archery, nature, outdoor living skills, pool & lake swimming, and boating. Daily transportation to and from North Boulder Park is provided.
Avid4 Adventure: Kids, come inside! Your dinner’s getting cold!
Founder David Secunda created Avid4 Adventure programs to encourage active children who are connected to nature and the environment. For you, Avid4 provides parent-friendly services like early drop-off to camp, easy to order nutritious lunches, & extended care options. Now, everyone’s happy.
Activities include kayaking, paddle sports, mountain biking, climbing, primitive skills, yoga, art, and music and movement. Four convenient locations offered.
Renaissance Adventures: Through the magic of pretend play, adventure reigns.
Renaissance Adventures offers Adventure Quest, an active, outdoor, Renaissance-themed theater game, designed to develop self-esteem, team-building, and creative problem-solving skills. Adventure Quest provides an alternative to sports-based outdoor programs, and encourages the imagination.
Programs include the full-day Dragon Quest, half-day Griffon Quest, Pegasus Group, an all-girls program, Counselor-in-Training opportunities for teens, and Opportunity Quest, a scholarship program for families requiring financial assistance. Eight locations offered, including Lyons and Golden.
Sunflower Farms Camps: The Farm Within The City.
The simple pleasures of life on the farm come alive at Sunflower Farms: splash in the watering hole, dig in the garden, snuggle a bunny, and ride a horse. Above all, turn off the television and computer games and get outside – all in a relaxed, rural setting. Summer programs offered for children ages 3-10 years.
Activities include: animals, art, work with nature, gardening, water fun, horses, treehouse fun, and group games.
Altogether Outdoors Camps: Taking advantage of all Boulder has to offer.
With its focus on quality outdoor experiences, meaningful community, and play for children ages 4.5 – 16, Altogether Outdoor camps provide a well-rounded program of summer fun. Recent AO camp parents describe it this way “We feel that this camp has set a new high standard for summer and seasonal day camps in Boulder County. When they come home with dirt everywhere and a smile on their faces, we love it even more.”
Activities include: swimming, hiking, fishing, teambuilding, climbing, kite flying, crafts, music, teambuilding games, backpacking, camp cooking, and navigation.
