CARSON CITY, NEVADA: Two new bills designed to outlaw transgender discrimination in Nevada received final legislative approval this past Monday, May 23rd. Both bills have been sent to Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and now await either his approval or veto.
The two bills that were passed by Mondays assembly were:
- Senate Bill 331 – This bill would prohibit places of public accommodations, such as hotels, restaurants and bars, from discriminating against transgender people.
- Senate Bill 368 – This bill would outlaw discrimination against transgenders in the rental or purchase of housing.
Both Senate Bill 331 and Senate Bill 368 passed with a final vote of 29-13. The 29 votes that were in favor of the bills consisted of all 26 Democrats and 3 Republicans. The three Republican votes consisted of Richard McArthur of Las Vegas, Ed Goedhart of Amargosa Valley and Kelly Kite of Minden.
It is reported that Transgender people make up an estimated 1% of the state’s population. The passing of these two bills into law would be a step forward for Transgender equality.
As these two bills now await Governor Sandoval’s approval or veto, Democratic Assemblyman Paul Aizley of Las Vegas has stated that he was told Sandoval will approve the two bills.
