June 1 is National Running Day. According to the organizers it “is a day when runners everywhere declare their passion for running. Wherever we are and whomever we’re with, we run—fast or slow, alone or with others, all over town or just around the block. It is a coast-to-coast celebration of a sport and activity that’s simple, inexpensive, and fun. It’s the perfect way for long-time runners to reaffirm their love of running and for beginners to kick off a lifetime and life-changing commitment”
According to Patty Hancock of the Ocean Running Club the club will be holding track work outs at the Toms River North High School Track at 6 PM and welcome all runners to come out to mark the occasion.
Susan Grant a member of the Crash and Burn Ultra Marathon Club will be doing her 15 to 20 mile trail run in the woods with some club members. She may tack on a few extra miles for the occasion.
Per JSRC President Carly Alburtus Depolo they would like encourage everyone to donate their old running sneakers- check out Soles4Shoes, Nike reuse-a-shoe, or Youngland Shoes/Spring Lake or Carella’s/Avon.They would also like to encourage people to run to work and/or the gym that day instead of driving. Some of the female members of the club are doing a track workout at Ocean Twp High School and then rewarding themselves with pizza and wine afterward.
Running is important to the JSRC because running is one of the most natural exercises a person can do. It improves your physical and mental health. Running is a great drug and the side effects are positive- increased life span, lower cholesterol, improved stamina, positive outlook on life- the list goes on and on.
