Just who got voted in last weekend’s Allstar NASCAR race? It could only be one driver if the fans vote. That driver is no other than Dale Earnhardt Junior. Why? Junior has a huge following of fans, apttly known as Junior Nation. This is the eighth consecutive year that Junior has also been named NASCAR’s most popular driver. A rookie to NASCAR might ask who, just what sort of person could hold that position eight years running, especially looking at his record of wins lately. This is a question that cannot be shortly explained.
First of all let’s dive head first to the elephant in the room, so to speak. Junior did not have an ordinary daddy. His father was the Intimidator! Dale senior was no ordinary NASCAR driver. One comment heard over and over again by men who raced with him s that to see the #3 in your review mirror was anything but calming. Senior was competitve and it won him races and championships. The heartbreak of the issue between Senior and Junior came on that fatefull race at Daytona. To NASCAR fans it is a day that will not can never be forgotten. For NASCAR rookies, it was during this race that Senior hit the wall and broke his neck. Even though he was rushed to the ER, there was nothing medical personnel could do. Senior died on impact. Because of this tragic event some excellent safety measures have emerged from it. A piece of equipment known as the Hans device (basically a neck security brace) is now mandatorily worn by all drivers at all levels in the NASCAR series. The second heartbreak of the day was knowing that Junior was racing in the same race with his daddy. Of course Junior’s crew chief and entire team waited until the race was over to inform him of his dad’s death.
When the Intimidator died, it didn’t take long for the fans to find a driver in the NASCAR Cup series to support and rally around. If not Dale Earnhardt Junior, then who? Senior’s boy was the obvious choice! And Senior had no small tribe of fans. Junior himself has his own fans. A very close friend is that kind of Junior fan. He grew up watching the Intimidator win race afte race each year. When Junior began his racing career, my friend followed his career very closely and still does to ths very day!
Although being Dale Senior’s son is a huge reason for his popularity, it is not the only one. Junior is a down home kind of guy. He is likable, and as NASCAR fans have voted, he is the sports most popular driver for eight years running.
