Athletes train for many months to get their bodies to look just right for the few moments they are on stage the day of competition. Some are very tense, and deprived while others are excited the day has come and they get to strut their stuff on stage. While there are basic types of training, each person is a bit different and each coach has their own knowledge and experiences to bring to their training. It is hard to explain to people not ‘in our world.
We prepare our food for the week, and put it in little Tupperware in coolers we bring everywhere. If we run out of protein it’s a disaster, ha-ha. While I personally try to act as normal as possible, eat before or after a function, it’s the times my dear friends try to ‘help’ that makes it the worst. They offer what would normally be ‘healthy’ food, however it is not in my Tupperware, therefore NOT in my diet. I find myself giving people dirty looks when they offer me a carrot. A carrot is healthy don’t get me wrong, but it just doesn’t fit in to my ‘green veggies only’ rule.
So this is the day we get to show what all this was for. When our family and friends can see what this is all about, and hopefully ‘get’ why we do it.
At 8:30am the athletes check-in. We go through registration; bodybuilders get weighed for their weight classes, Figure and Bikini get heighted for height cla sses. We get our numbers. The pre-judging show begins at 10:30 and if we can we try to go out and watch our friends or teammates and cheer them on. For girls, we have a little more to do (hair, make-up, jewelry, etc.). We get lined up, turned around (“Quarter Turn to the Right”), rearranged and judged and sent off for a break. We don’t truly know our placings until we come back at night.
During intermission we get to check out some of the sponsors at their booths. This event was sponsored by:

The Finals starts at 6:30pm. This is the more fun part as there is an MC, guest posers, music and just more glam. We come back, reapply, touch-up and do it all again, but this time we get our placings, and hopefully trophies.
This time, I got 3rdin Figure B. I had a lot of clients, friends and co-workers from Bally Total Fitness (downtown) come to support me. A lot of people ask what it’s like backstage. Some people are in their zone, and then there are newbies that are anxious to make friends. I have always loved meeting and spending the day with other competitors. This time I had a team from Ray’s Built Tuff Gym. I was trained by Fatima Johnson (Body by Fatima) who also trained Melissa Young (Figure C) and Jose Zarate (Teen Bodybuilding). Also with us was Michelle Lin (Figure A) trained by Robin Gizzi. I also have a good friend Tashi Tudor (Bikini B) who trains with Ken’s Barbie’s. So you CAN be friends even if you train on different teams! It’s hard for newbies and loners and it’s so great that the teams reach out and we all help and support each other. I have been at many shows where a new girl comes in totally green and we all get together to help paint her, lend her jewelry help with hair and makeup.
This show was really great. It ran much quicker than I have been accustomed to in the past. I was very grateful to get out in time to eat!
