When Sheriff’s deputy Rick awakens from a coma he finds the world has changed drastically. First thinking mankind was wiped out he quickly learns the dead are actually roaming the Earth as flesh-hungry zombies while the remaining human survivors hide in constant fear of being devoured. Taking matters into his own hands Rick sets out to find his family and continue being a cop.
Andrew Lincoln (Rick), Jon Bernthal (Shane), Sarah Callies (Lori), Laurie Holden (Andrea), Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale), Steven Yeun (Glenn), Chandler Riggs (Carl), Norman Reedus (Daryl), Emma Bell (Amy), Iron Singleton (T-Dog).
The Walking Dead begins with very little explanation before jumping straight into the story. Even after 4 episodes we still don’t know exactly what caused people to become zombies or how the groups of normal humans actually survived. The story moves along well and presents the impact of a world full of zombies and the struggle by normal humans to survive very nicely. As the series continues however we see less of the zombies and more drama until we almost forget the zombies even exist. Here’s to hoping that season 2 will return with the impact found in the first couple of episodes from season 1.
Acting was decent with Lincoln doing pretty well in the lead role. The addition of Bernthal as an antagonist was a nice move and he pulls it off nicely. Callies is okay but a bit hard to believe at times. DeMunn is another bright spot in the story, as is Reedus, taking much of the attention. The remainder of the supporting cast does a decent job and the crew as a whole seems to interact well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are all nicely done with plenty of post-apocalyptic detail and background. Physical effects are nicely done, as is makeup for the zombies. CGI effects look low-budget and are a bit disappointing considering the overall technical quality of the film. Dialogue is okay though it gets a bit dry at times. Sound and soundtrack are good.
Overall The Walking Dead is a decent series that started season 1 much better than it ended. It is nice to see someone trying to bring zombies mainstream and die-hard zombie fans will probably enjoy this the most.
With plenty of zombies, blood and gore, violence, and mild sexuality this should be fine for teens and above.
