“I will show you that will is stronger than fear.“ – Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern
What’s good: The special effects are great.
What’s not good: The villain was pointless and pathetic.
What happened: It seems like the trend these days is to make a film heavy on the CGI and light on the storyline. This may lead to a decent film at times but is usually a recipe for disaster. ‘Green Lantern’ is yet another reminder that you need more than star power and special effects to make a good film.
A special group of intergalactic soldiers known as Green Lanterns are charged with keeping the peace throughout the universe. Armed with their powerful rings, they can create anything they set their minds to. Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison) is one of the bravest members of the Green Lantern corps. He narrowly escapes an attack but suffers a mortal wound. He is forced to land abruptly in order to find his replacement. Whoever it is, this individual must be fearless.
Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a test pilot for the Air Force. He is cocky, arrogant, and reckless. Memories of what happened to his father years ago still haunt him. His actions against military fighter planes prove to be costly. Carol (Blake Lively) is especially angry with him. Their past only makes things more complicated. Hal is later confronted by a strange alien being. The instructions he is given make no sense. Hal is magically transported to a world he never imagined. He is the first human chosen to join the Green Lantern corps. The responsibility of protecting the universe is overwhelming to Hal. He is not so sure that he is the right man for the job. This must be a mistake and Sinestro (Mark Strong) agrees. Sinestro is the leader of the Green Lantern corps. His desire to use an unpredictable weapon will eventually lead to a path of destruction.
Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) receives a surprise visit from governmental agents. He is given access to a top secret project but doesn’t know why. This project changes and ultimately disfigures him. He begins to experience abilities he never had before. Meanwhile, Parallax is an evil entity able to consume entire planets. He grows stronger by feeding on your fear and he threatens to destroy planet earth. Hal has to conquer his fear and accept his responsibilities in order to save the world.
‘Green Lantern’ could have been so much better than it was. First of all, Hal’s aerial combat against the military planes was really good. The special effects for his Green Lantern suit and the weapons he made with his ring were cool to see. With Ryan Reynolds in the cast, you can expect a few laughs and this one delivers. This movie was surprisingly boring at times. The relationship between Hal and Carol was weak at best. Their connection was more of an afterthought instead of a driving reason for Hal to save the world. The worst part of this film by far is the Hector Hammond character. A hero is defined by the enemy he faces and this guy was pitiful. It is clear that more money was spent perfecting the special effects than creating a good story.
Bottom Line: ‘Green Lantern’ is not as bad as you may have heard, but certainly not worth the price of admission.
