MLB 2K11 online can often seem more annoying than a 2 seam fastball coming back to hit the outside corner. Between the over use of bunting, to the people who don’t understand that Cliff Lee isn’t Roy Halladay’s closer, the game of baseball can get distorted almost beyond recognition. So to help combat the MLB 2K11 online mine field here are some helpful tips that will surely help you knock your next game out of the park.
1) Stop bunting so much.
Bunting is a useful tool in the right hands. A man on 1st with one out and the pitcher up, for example, calls for a bunt 99 times out of a 100. Do you know what doesn’t call for a bunt? Doing it every time your leadoff hitter is up. Just because Jimmy Rollins is up does not mean that bunting is your best course of action since hitting a double or more is still a possibility by swinging the bat. The MLB 2K11 bunting brigade may disagree, but often times they are left in a situation where they must shut you out to win 1-0 and never rack up a solid enough OPS to beat a real player.
2) How about not stealing for once?
Often times items 1 and 2 are intertwined. A player will bunt safely due to the defense not paying attention, and then compound the defenses’ mistake by stealing 2nd base on the first pitch. If successful you know 3rd base, and probably another bunt are coming next, followed by a soul crushing loss that would never happen in real life where you want to break your $50 controller. To combat this simply use the X Button (360) to pitch out after you have selected your pitch but before you start your motion. As long as you can make even a mediocre throw to 2nd base your annoying opponent will be a sitting duck.
3) The clock is your friend.
Do you know what I can do in 5 minutes? Maybe use the bathroom, or make a sandwich, or even better I could read an article on icedjamb.com. Do you know why this is important? MLB 2K11 has a 5 minute pause timer which means that if someone decides to freeze you out of playing for a cheap win then they will automatically take a loss after 5 minutes. So next time you’re up 4-1 in the 5th inning and your MLB 2K11 opponent tries to taunt you into quitting, just go make a sandwich and come back 5 minutes later. You will be one win higher on the leaderboards.
4) Practice patience or become a mental patient.
Not even Brendan Fraser could throw a 27 pitch perfect game in his awful movie, “The Scout”, so why are you trying to let your opponent do it? Practice some patience at the plate, and work a count or two. Ryan Howard did not become a league leading RBI man by hitting the first pitch in every at bat. In MLB 2K11 it is vital to make your opponent throw at least 10 pitches per inning. If you stick to that number, which by the way is only 1 ball taken per inning if you swing and miss 9 times, then your opponent’s starter will tire out by the 6th or 7th inning. Tiring out the starter is crucial for two reasons. A tired starter is simply way less effective than a fresh one, and a fresh reliever in the 6th or 7th inning is bound to be less talented than the team’s previous starter. Also, even if you get one of those MLB 2K11 players who decides that Cliff Lee, instead of Antonio Bastardo, should be relieving Roy Halladay in the 7th inning then I have one more trick that you should know about. It takes a starting pitcher twice as long to get ready than a standard relief pitcher. So bring in Cliff Lee if you want, because he won’t be looking like Cliff Lee until his 2nd or 3rd inning of work.
5) The batter’s eye can see the homerun you’re about to hit in the not too distant future.
The batter’s eye in MLB 2K11 is a mildly controversial online setting that tells you what pitch is about to be thrown when a pitcher makes a subpar delivery motion. While it doesn’t come before every pitch, it is an astoundingly important tool to use if you want to make solid contact. By combining tip 4 with the batter’s eye you will be amazed at the number of 3-1 or 2-0 counts you will have to go hunting for fastballs, and despite what you may have come to believe due to the overly aggressive pitch speed online, if you know it’s coming anyone can hit a fastball in MLB 2K11. Assuming you’re not bunting that is.
